My point exactly, you'd at least try but the op doesn't seem to even want to do that much. There could be other ways of securing funding but It's not even about money. It's about flesh and blood. Thats what I find so callous about it and I'm more surprised none of the rest of you find the ops approach somewhat callous.

Surely you'd at least TRY to do something?

I honestly have no idea, I have no siblings, no cousins, no aunts or uncles. Obviously I would die for my children.
However 20 years is an awfully long time.
Sometimes family relationships are difficult, I can see in those cases that a sibling wouldn't do anything to help.
Just because one is related to another, does not mean you even like each other.
    63 mortgage payments to go.

    Zero wins 2016 😥

Again, I get that. But knowing my brother died in a hell hole of a foreign jail with nobody to help him? I'd struggle with that myself.

    In the OP's situation:
    No.
    Unequivocally no.
    Non negotiable.
Just accept that not everyone has the same thoughts about family that you do.

In the OP's circumstances, I wouldn't struggle with it all.
As clearly the OP isn't struggling with it.

It did occur to me, I just don't think it's a reason to respond to him.

What has he done to earn the OP's help? So far, he's tried to deny the OP his inheritance, cut off all contact when he didn't get his own way, and has now broken the law, got himself thrown in jail and failed to put anything in place to cover his healthcare costs.

He wanted to cut off contact, the OP respected that and has moved on with his life. The brother doesn't get to swan back in and decide that contact should be resumed just because he now wants something from the OP. That's even more selfish than his previous actions.

Well I think dying in a foreign jail knowing your family don't want to know can't be a very nice way to end your life for anyone. Nobody deserves tha surely. Like I said it would weigh on my conscience heavily if I had been the one who turned the other cheek in his last days. It all seems rather cold to me and I couldn't do it regardless of past bitterness. I would find it inhuman.

.... Then of course there's the small matter of repatriation of his body once its all over. Someone's going to have to pay for that.

The brother made his choice 20 years ago.
I think he does deserve it.
    You can say it's cold.
    You can say it's callous.
If I was in the OP's situation, I really wouldn't care what you called it or what you thought.

You mean the OP should pay?
