Thanks all for the jar smell ideas, I will give it ago.
I popped out child free this morning to a retail park which is normally rammed full of people by 11ish (when I left) it was still half empty, this is unusual. I had some things to return to a couple of stores, and did a supermarket sweep in home bargains, I wanted to compare food prices to Asda, pesto was 4p cheaper I didn't bother, peanut butter was the same, fry light they only had sunflower oil, nothing imo was much if at all any cheaper and you factor in the cost of fuel to get there is wasn't worth the saving for me food wise. Toilet roll I thought was cheaper. Toothpaste, hayfever tablets, some cleaning items, grease proof paper etc were though plus an Easter book for 99p and couple of other Easter bits I spent £20 and the bathroom/cleaning/medicine is now better stocked.
Asda didn't have any skimmed milk and Warburtons was OOS nothing major.
What I did notice was asda plum tomatoes the tins that arrived this morning has a shorter date than those in the cupboard, they have changed the saturates and now say they are OK in the fridge open for 3 days rather than 2 now. Also I ordered some branded tinned tuna a pack of 4, the ones I ordered last week are taller in the stack than the ones that arrived today, the tins are smaller and the more recent ones have ring pulls compared to last week's delivery, I checked the weight and it said the drained tuna is the same weight in both packs so I presumed its either more squashed or less brine?! Asda smart price items are back online now, I've stocked up on their 20p rice pudding.10 -
If toilet roll gets that bad price wise, there is always cloth that can be washed and reused. Some people already do that for the environmental factor. I'd rather not, but we'll see how expensive it gets first.
Dropping a brand on a few things. Most stuff I stuck to name brand on, but I did have some favourites which I've now gotten less picky about lol.
I find homebargains and the like can be really good for birthday gifts for the kids friends, and cheap seasonal activities. So if you're going for those, you can get the other bits at the same time. But I agree, most of the food stuff isn't cheaper (or at least, not enough to offset the fuel, as you said Thrifty).
I grabbed DD an Easter activity/colouring book from poundland on Wednesday for only a quid whilst I was waiting for DH's eye op to finish (I wasn't allowed in with him, patients only - thankfully it wasn't as long as expected). I shan't be getting anything else as I have some reusable Easter bits from previous years that we will use again and again.February wins: Theatre tickets13 -

Copied from another forum:"Friend who is a part time sales rep for fertiliser said he had a terrible Wednesday as price and availability of fertiliser was released and then withdrawn 30 minutes later by firms before he even had time to contact all the farmers and ask them if they were prepared to pay over £1000/tonne for it. What a crazy world we are in just now.

I think just about anything you can think of could come under the prepping banner at the moment - due to the effects of energy hikes and potential shortages. So I'm making sure I have any tools and equipment I need. But I'm also stocking up on medical supplies including supplements/foods etc which might help combat accidental radiation release. Moving swiftly on, I'm comparing different suppliers of bulk pulses. Oh and I just discovered you can freeze bananas in sections.
Defrosted they are a soggy but lovely sweet addition to yogurt, puddings etc.

I'm deep in the Bero recipe book working out how to fill the oven and the cake/biscuit tin. Wish I had more room to stash bulk foods..

I love my Bero book (and the one I have which belonged to my Grandma and great aunties as it has a recipe for Spice Buns which I love!) It's definitely useful for filling up the oven, a tray of scones here, a crumble there. If I could get my head around making pastry I could do an even better job.Grocery budget in 2023 £2279.18/£2700Grocery budget in 2022 £2304.76/£2400Grocery budget in 2021 £2107.86/£2200Grocery budget in 2020 £2193.02/£2160Saving for Christmas 2023 #15 £ 90/ £36510

I buy frozen ready rolled pastry, too much of a faff for me to make from scratch. Now thinking about a pie maker.

Is anyone else noticing a shortage of dried beans/pulses in the supermarkets? I only managed to find an offer in Morris, 2 for £3, worked out at about £2.50/kg, across the KTC brand. Much cheaper per kilo than online.
