Thanks all, cough *may* have been alittle over sensitive, (one of those days!).

Tins of coconut milk are good for upping the calories and adding flavour and texture. Beans and rice are great as they can be flavoured in so many different ways - curry, chilli, stews, soups (celery and haricot or cannelini is a favourite here). Burgers and various salads can also be made - there are loads of recipes online. I would suggest trying some out so you have some ready before you actually need to use them.Decluttering Awards: 🏅🏅11

Thriftygifty said:I just wanted to apologise if a post that I posted 28th Feb upset anyone, MSE have messaged me and removed it for going off the "saving money topic" although I presumed asking about stoves was saving money. I guess it was me briefly mentioning I was getting nervous about the current world situation. Anyhow if you've reported me I apologise again and I shall be keeping quiet from now on. (This post will now also probably be removed)

Although, I don't like peanut butter and don't use it. It has a lot of calories and can be kept for up to 2 years unopened (if it's the type with preservatives). Without preservatives it can last several months unopened. HTHGC Feb 25 - £225.54/£250 Mar £218.63/£2409

Don't forget tinned fruit when it comes to adding variety and taste to meals. It may not have the protein but can add calories where needed and flavour to things like curry - particularly mild ones, and risotto-type meals. I've used pineapple and peaches and sometimes pears or apricots for years in savoury dishes.11

And just as a nice treat as well 😊
I do wonder if bananas will increase in price/become more scarce, as I have already been marvelling at how cheap they are considering the distance they have travelled to get here!February wins: Theatre tickets8 -

If you make your own fruity oat bars, you might not necessarily make them cheaper than shop ones, but they will certainly be more filling and, more importantly, you can pack them with nutritious stuff like seeds. You will know there's no nasty fats or additives in them. I know there will be loads of recipes online if you look.
Beans and rice doesn't appeal to me as a meal, but for once in a while it's ok. You can do other stuff with beans. Jack Monroe has a recipe for carrot, cumin and kidney bean burgers which apparently was a lifesaver in the days when she was struggling for cash. I also experimented when my vegan daughter and her bloke came to dinner. I got some tortilla wraps, did some mixed, roasted root vegetables and heated up some tinned kidney and pinto beans with tinned tomatoes, herbs and garlic. The beans and the root veg made a great filling for the wraps, along with salad and salsa and dips. Non vegans can also add grated cheese.
Peanut butter can be a nutritious additive to curries, as well as being used in a satay sauce. There are recipes for nutritious homemade Greek-style yoghurt which can be used in both sweet and savoury meals. Preppers, we might end up with not much money to spare, but we can eat well! One life - your life - live it!14 -

QueenJess said:The thing about bananas is that they keep really well so they can be shipped here very slowly and still be nice and green. It’s more likely stuff that is flown over will shoot up in price and we’ll all be forced to eat in season.
Ref the thing about bananas, the really significant thing is that your common or garden banana is the Cavendish banana, and the Cavendish banana gets nobbled by Panama disease. Given the devastation it causes, it'll be interesting to see how that pans out, but a pound to a penny says your cheapo supermarket narmer's days are numbered! We're all doomed11
