The Prepping Thread - A Newer Beginning ;)

If you slice a banana and freeze flat on a tray, then you can store in a bag once frozen. Then....if you blend the frozen banana with some choc milkshake powder, you get a delicious choc banana ice cream substitute. Seriously tasty!pineapple said:I think just about anything you can think of could come under the prepping banner at the moment - due to the effects of energy hikes and potential shortages. So I'm making sure I have any tools and equipment I need. But I'm also stocking up on medical supplies including supplements/foods etc which might help combat accidental radiation release. Moving swiftly on, I'm comparing different suppliers of bulk pulses. Oh and I just discovered you can freeze bananas in sections.
Defrosted they are a soggy but lovely sweet addition to yogurt, puddings etc. February wins: Theatre tickets12 -
Potassium Iodide. Very difficult to get hold of at the moment as most places sold out.SerialLurker said:

Not sure you'd get a high enough dosage from that though (this is an i dont know, not a 'it definitely doesn't'). https://www.cdc.gov/nceh/radiation/emergencies/ki.htmgreenbee said:

When I was about 8 or 9 I went with my mother and grandmother to a demonstration at the Women's Rural and everyone was given a Be-ro book and a bag of flour, including me - it made me feel very important! I now have a collection of Be-ro books of different editions (kept in a Be-ro tin) Some recipes have changed over the years; the later ones tend to be richer, and some have disappeared - and some reappear in later editions.Toonie said:I love my Bero book (and the one I have which belonged to my Grandma and great aunties as it has a recipe for Spice Buns which I love!) It's definitely useful for filling up the oven, a tray of scones here, a crumble there. If I could get my head around making pastry I could do an even better job.
I use ready-rolled pastry as well because I just can't make good pastry.14 -
Ming Vase I have a pie maker ( makes 2 pies ) which is hardly ever used. I never got on with it as it was a lot of trial and error getting the pastry and filling ratio just right, then it took ages to cook 2 pies when I could have cooked several in the oven and then frozen the extras. Perhaps a 4 pie maker would be better though. HTHFailure is simply the opportunity to begin again, but this time more intelligently14

Gosh, now here's a thought. Given its economy in use and its green credentials, what odds on some firm or other soon offering to instal for you that Asian water spray thingy which was always referred to by backpackers as either the bum gun or the assblaster?euronorris said:If toilet roll gets that bad price wise ...
Just noticed the war time farm is on Sky if anyone interested. I loved the war time kitchen and garden series that was on a few years back. I bought the book in a CS and I have quite a collection of war time and WI recipes for old pamphlets and books I have picked up in CS and boot sales.
I have yet to plan my garden this year as we are officially in mud season. The fields are bogging, literally! We have temporary ponds in one of the fields along the line of an old river course. There were herons and ducks on them and the frogs have laid their spawn. Walking round I noticed big fat wood pigeons, ducks, rabbits and squirrels, hmmmm! The canal has quite a selection of fish including the Zanders (?? not sure of name) which are an introduced species and can not be put back if caught. Just wondering what they are like to eat! My patch of wild garlic is coming up nicely so I will be picking that when it is ready.
As for preps I am just adding bits and bobs as I go along atm. I really need to do an inventory of everything and see what gaps I have . I am yet to pluck up courage to use the pressure canner although I am reading up on the methods and the recipes.

Btw forgot to add I bought potassium iodide tablets when Trump was elected as I thought he was a serious threat. Turns out he was just a bit mad compared to todays scenario! The tablets are more effective for younger people and children as they are at greater risk . Apparently as you get older you are less likely to take up the radiation via your thyroid and therefore need less of a dosage ( don't take this as gospel!) .I bought enough to last the family for two weeks with the boys having the majority of the doses. They are still in date and I would use them even if they were not.

Ermm ... would that be Amazon?euronorris said:I picked up some chunky candles at the weekend, and then I saw something about 9 day candles. They've probably been mentioned here before, but just in case, I thought I'd mention them again. They have a literal burn time of 9 full days. Available on that big online store.
Whatever, is it just us that's never found a candle over about an inch diameter which will actually burn properly all the way down? We long ago gave up on the really chunky Ikea ones because they always started guttering.
Saw a pepper on tiktok had them in her preps and she also said she had tested them. I noticed that if you bought in multiples, the price per candle significantly decreases, so if you can share an order with someone it would make it much cheaper.
Shane about the Ikea candles, as rhey are the ones I just bought 🤦♀️ oh well, some big candles is better than no big candles.
They are difficult to relight apparentlyVuja De - the feeling you'll be here later9
