Sometimes supermarkets charge different prices online than they do in store, as they have less overheads online. So the online price you see won't necessarily be the in store price.GC Feb 25 - £225.54/£250 Mar £218.63/£24012

I've had the canner for well over a year and finally plucked up the courage to use it last monday. It was ridiculously easy so I did a second batch yesterday. There's so many excellent videos on youtube. I would recommend Suttons Daze for no nonsense, easy to follow instructions. I now have 30 jars of chicken breast in my 'store' and next will be a batch of stewing steak. The worst that could happen is that the jars don't seal in which case, now perfectly cooked, it can all go back in the freezer. Happily both batches were fine. My sister who bought her canner at the same time as I did and is an old hand at it now, gave me the push I needed by telling me to rinse out 16 jars, put them on the side and get my canner out of it's box! The process took me two days in all because I can't stand for long. Day 1, I got everything ready including chopping the chicken into chunks. Day 2 I canned it!!elaine241 said:
As for preps I am just adding bits and bobs as I go along atm. I really need to do an inventory of everything and see what gaps I have . I am yet to pluck up courage to use the pressure canner although I am reading up on the methods and the recipes.
Give it a go....rinse your jars, bring your canner out of it's hiding place, get your ingredients ready! 14 -
I not only have some string bags, I can make them! Easy to crochet with a giant 20mm hook; I can knot netting too, but crochet is quicker. Ordinary (cheap) green garden string works well.Angie - GC Nov 25 £149.77/£450: 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 40/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)16

My granny used to say the same. I always used to take a couple when I went on the market and the more stuff you put in them the bigger they seemed to get. Don't know what happened to them.Si_Clist said:
CBA with it, Elaine. As long as we can get everything we want online and delivered right to our front door, there's absolutely no point me going shopping for anything AFAIC. Much more sensible to spend my time helping The Lady Wife in the veg garden, doing most of the cooking, teaching myself piano, doing my pre-op exercises and riding my bikeelaine241 said:Si-Clist welcome to todays real world shopping! Gaps on shelves, items not available, having to shop round for best price on things like coffee and then hoping they are there! Develop a grab it while you can mindset and stocking up when you do actually find what you are looking for!
Ref "grab it while you can", my old Granny was always on about that (and according to her sister had been since the first war). "Never go out without a string bag" was one of her favourite sayings.

I love my string bags, they are all the eco fashion thing, mine are by a brand called Turtle bags £5ish but really good quality, come in short or long handled and they even do children's ones £3ish.11

I just did a major shop for pulses etc online. Small packets were about the same price as the supermarket but upwards of 500 gram were generally cheaper plus there was a huge variety, especially of organic. There wasn't much availability at all at my online supermarkets - it might be different instore.I liked that the supplier had an additional tickbox for Ukraine donations. I wonder how many are doing this.Re Potassium Iodide, coincidentally I'd just ditched my out of date 'Fukushima supply'. I looked into getting more but apparently I'm so ancient now, it would be a waste of time anyway. I did get kelp, spirulina, miso....I'm trying again with sprouting seeds (couldn't get the last ones to take off). Seems a good idea to have some fresh indoor grown nutrition.Oh and going to get some bulk white vinegar for cleaning and pickling. Plenty of fresh genuinely free range eggs available locally.

Maybe I am overly cautious as I have a lung condtion but I would avoid burning paraffin wax candles for any length of time. I prefer beeswax but they aren't cheap. So I also have some little lights powered by batteries as a back up.pelirocco said:

Ermm ... would that be Amazon?euronorris said:I picked up some chunky candles at the weekend, and then I saw something about 9 day candles. They've probably been mentioned here before, but just in case, I thought I'd mention them again. They have a literal burn time of 9 full days. Available on that big online store.
Whatever, is it just us that's never found a candle over about an inch diameter which will actually burn properly all the way down? We long ago gave up on the really chunky Ikea ones because they always started guttering.
Saw a pepper on tiktok had them in her preps and she also said she had tested them. I noticed that if you bought in multiples, the price per candle significantly decreases, so if you can share an order with someone it would make it much cheaper.
Shane about the Ikea candles, as rhey are the ones I just bought 🤦♀️ oh well, some big candles is better than no big candles.
They are difficult to relight apparently

Yes, I've got a couple somewhere. One bought and the other crocheted by myself, but I prefer my jute bags for heavy shopping, the odd times we actually go to the shops. I also made some cloth bags from fat quarters, for when we buy clothes, after they started charging for bags. I keep a couple of poppy bags in my handbag, just in case we see something else when we're out. I think I'm a real 'bag lady'.Si_Clist said

Managed to pick up a few OTC medications from Approved Food recently as well things like toothpaste and vitamins. Also managed to get quite a bit of in date cat food which I always try to keep a stock of, some of which was premium brands / specialist food for conditions (gastro, renal etc) which are always horribly expensive. Picked up some firelighters and omeprazole reduced in Tesco tonight.12
