The Prepping Thread - A Newer Beginning ;)

Been trying out using my own processed/prepped food today. Used various dehydrated veggies in a soup which was okay but not great so need to work on that.
Then made mash topping for a cottage pie with home canned potatoes and had canned carrots on the side which worked well so plan is to can more potatoes this weekend as we've also tried them as roasties and they were lovely. Just don't want to spend time and energy processing things we won't use.
My parents local farm shop was selling 2 * 20kg sacks of spuds for £8 recently. Much cheaper than round here! Sadly couldn't stock up this time but will do if I see them for that price again.15 -
I've been filling my freezer with pumpkin. One of the local charity shops had a monster pumpkin in their Halloween window display; it had been grown on our allotments, so organic, & donated because the surprised grower couldn't think what else to do with such a monster. The manageress is a friend, and I happened to be in the shop when she was wondering how on Earth she was going to get it to the dump after Halloween; at 7 stone, it was too heavy for her to lift. To cut a long story short, I volunteered to take it on in exchange for a donation - there's good eating on pumpkins, cooked right, and they're full of vitamins & minerals if grown well - so DD2 & I liberated it at the weekend. Two friends popped in for a pre-lockdown cuppa this morning and we divvied it up, singing "Hotel California" ("And in the master's chambers they gathered for the feast; they stab it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the beast" etc.) They ended up with a quarter each & I with a half, which has now been roasted, mashed & portioned into freezer bags, ready to be made into soups & Pumpkin Bread (a great favourite in this household) throughout the winter. The peel & seeds are cooking away in my Wonderbag, to be added to the chickens' breakfasts for the next few mornings.
What a waste, if it had just been carted off to the dump...Angie - GC Oct 25: £290.57/£500: 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 28/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)22 -
Thriftwizard, seeing lots of pumpkins being offered on local Freecycle/food exchange groups. Sadly my freezer is full after a slight mix up with last online order meant we ended up with double the amount of milk for the freezer than we planned so no room for much else!14

As for prepping I am still adding slowly and surely. I bought a new pair of binoculars at L*dl , mainly to look at the birds on my bird table but also with one eye on prepping. I went into Morris*ns and they were having a clearance, I bought string, safety matches, glue, fabric glue, dog chews, hook selection, lightbulbs etc all reduced to 25-30p. They have all been stashed in the useful draw!!
My pumpkin is sadly uncarved and sitting in the pantry. Halloween here was a non event, boys are too old to dress up and trick or treat. The only time we do dress up is for the rugby Halloween party but obviously not this year.

Si. If it wasnt for your post i would not of know about 2nd lockdown please dont go
Prepping wise thanks for the info re reduced items i may have to take a walk to morrys and see if mine has any goodies . I've got to be extra careful as im waiting to move and council dont like preppers (they call us hoarders). So dog food 12k plus a half bag need treats and dentistixs he li the aldi minty ones and if i run out i know about it he gets 1 every bedtime and within 30mins hes setted for the night without it he keeps me awake so must stock up water got plenty cant drink tap unless boiled and used for tea love me a builders brew
Having to hide the tinned food among the boxes for the move not ideal but got to be done for now so ive lost count on how many ive got possible enough acouple of months dried food a bit more as easier to store its just me and the dog kids all left home now 20plus packs of macncheese pasta tin tomatos was doing ok then hard to get slowly adding again had to replace the granny shoper trolley i think i overloaded it 1 time too many son in law fixed it til it couldn't be fixed so need to be careful and stick to heavy items in online order when i can get a slot i ve always had extra in so its difficult to know when to stop with 7 kids it was best thing i ever did even if they did pinch thing and try to say id forgot them itemised reciept are my friend they dont lie lol
Im not sure how im going to manage winter here kids took the poles down for the curtains when we thought i was moving ( thats when i found out the council dont like us preppers) i was told couldnt move too many cardboard boxes i was told id have to at least half it yikes that's all the food i thought then it was suggested i could donate some things which i had no problem with as long as i could get out of here 12 months on im still here still waiting so being care ful just in case i get lucky soon so how to keep the living room warm is my problem atm its dropped a lot 14c as im typing this thats cold but as anyone with fibro knows we can be too cold or too hot all in 1 hour atm only my toes are cold i think im going to have to sort a new pole for the living room needsto be 6ft plus if i get an extending one it will still fit when i move im hoping once i get out they will warm up hope the rain stays off havent had chance to break the new boots in yet so thats a job over next 4 weeks now need to get going will catch up later if internet allows using mobile atm so not the best but will do till im in new place then a decent connection i cant wait
Edited to add sorry didnt realised id rambled so long2nd purse challenge no040£0 Sealed pot challenge ???? £2 trolley find not counting small coins till end year16 -
