Thanks for the reply disney_cjd, will be booking the Marriot tonight.

    Hi Paul
Well we just got back to Clermont in 1 and 40mins from Clearwater and I must say the Marriott was very very good. The only downside was that its also a Virgin holidays hotel so the usual 50 year olds in football shirts were there :) but I must admit the staff were super. I have stayed ina f ew Marriotts for work etc and the service here was outstanding.
An example, we had toruble with our electronic key, they could not do enough to help and then when the kids were asleep a knock on the door, it was the Manager with a bottle of wine, some cheese and biscuits, a load of fruit and some cookies for the kids. Not bad at all.
The pool is lovely, no more than 4ft deep but has a huge waterfull and is full of games and toys.
Access to the beach is via a short path between the Sheraton and the Grand hotel BUT if you want they will run you there and give you free towels, ice cold water bottles and toys for the kids. Then they give you a card and will collect you when you are ready.
For a short break its great.

We also found one of the best italian resturants in Indian Rocks beach which is a 15 min drive down one road from the hotel. It was called Villa Gallace and is run by Luigi who greats you and the menu was superb, if there was nothing there you watned he would make anything for you. It was a little more expensive than usual at 80 bucks for the 4 of us but it was worth every cent.

are there any surcharges for doing lots of miles in a hire car? i'm planning a road trip to georgia for a gig while i'm there as well as a trip to clearwater/miami including (hopefuly) the late night shuttle launch on the 8th.

anyone car to suggest a good place to book for car hire? im looking at sanford airport from the 4th to the 18th oct. i'm 33 yrs old, have no points on my licence or anything like that, looking for a basic small car with aircon. dont need anything like extra drivers/satnav (i'll be bringing my trusty tomtom)

cheapest i've found so far is easycar.com at £170.88 (plus 9% quidco) this includes CDW. anyone got any tips/thoughts?

    *edit*
also, when you get to thire place and ask for your credit card, do they reserve an amount on the card, or just save it for later? i've only got one credit card with a £200 limit (deliberate choice).. it isnt going to get maxed out or anything is it? and does it matter if we give them my girlfriends credit card (higher limit)?

    Hi Wayne

OK so you need to make sure you have UNLIMITED miles. To be fair most of them offer this but best to check.

Also its not always the size of the car but the boot. Remember you need to get your bags in there so sometimes you may want to go a class higher.

All US cars have aircon otherwise you will melt. I can remember many many years ago coming with my folks and hiring an old Torino and melting in it as they had no AC.

As for where to hire, I did post many pages ago now some good places. Check out....

    https://www.usrentacar.com
    www.airlinenetwork.co.uk

Also look to see if you have a car company ON airport. There is nothing worse than getting there and realizing you now need a bus to get your car. To do this take a look at Sanford's website.

Finally, as you are the worng side of 30 like many of us you will not get lumbard with age restrictions.

Have a scout around and if I can find more info on the other places to hire a car I will add this in.

BEst to check but we had a car to drive from Tampa to the house for a day and the Mrs drove and it was my card. So if you have the same name you may be OK.

  • I've got AA membership that came with my car as standard for 3 years (Skoda), but because it came with the car I don't have any membership card or anything, I would just call the specific number and quote my registration if it ever broke down...

I've read that AA don't send out paper AAA cards for US discounts anymore and instead you're just supposed to show your standard AA membership card or quote the number from it, but I don't have either! Does anyone know if i'd be able to somehow claim AAA discounts?

    Cheers!

I looked at this too as OH has an AA card, one website said to put in your 3 digit number from the back of the card for international members. There is no number so I couldn't get a discounted quote.

I see, at my sons school the head is practically obliged to authorise up to 10 days per year.

However a family friend was fined £120 for taking her child out of school unauthorised. She was elated, she had saved over £2000 on their holiday and including the fine she had still saved a huge amount of money.

I'm going for three 3 weeks next May (Whitsun week in between) and have asked permission to take my daughter out of school for 10 days. The school have agreed, as mentioned above they are able to authorise 10 days per year, although it is not encouraged. They get a slap on the wrist from the local authority if it is over 10 days! The Headmistress thanked us for letting her know in advance.

I don't think you should be allowed any days away from school for a holiday:mad:
