Have a look at the PO as they have family package or with a lone parent travelling the 16 year old would be free. Do check out all the cash back sites for cash back.

    Thanks for the advice.

To be honest I am only looking for the basic/minimum requirement - otherwise the costs would begin to really mount up. I hired a car last year in Florida and found the driving/traffic conditions no problems.

    Still open for anyones advice.
CDW If damage is not waived, and a rented car is stolen, or damaged by accident, vandalism, weather, etc., the renter must pay the full cost, plus administrative charges and loss of use.
They may want to reserve the value of the car on your credit card in case its totalled. I went to America twice last year, and have driven there regularly over the years, and I took most of the insurances except the tyre damage waiver and the breakdown insurance.

I wouldnt take the risk that someone may rear end me, eg because I stopped at a turn right on red sign, through no fault of my own, and I have to pay a few grand to the rental company.

Also remember Platinum includes a tank of petrol.

Along the insurance thread- remember in the small print they do not have to give you a replacement vehicle if you have an accident, even if its not your fault, so no replacement means taxi's and public transport. And distances covered out there is fantastic even when most of the day car is sat in car parks.
I never used CDW for years, but then it was not a requirement, and the first time i had an accident, hit and run driver, I had a fully comped car with Dollar [all in insurance came free] changed it for a new car after very little form filling.
I have had fully comped insurance ever since!

Youll need both the $25/day and the £20/day. Youll be taking a big risk if you dont take the Platinum topup IMHO.....I think the standard insurance is like 3rd party only, and youre driving on the wrong side of the road, with a vague knowledge of the road rules (turn right on red etc), and you dont really know where youre going.

Virgin Platinum package includes the drivers under 25 premium, so you DON'T need both!

TBH we've always taken the Virgin platinum package for the peace of mind - the price also includes a full tank of fuel (with prices rising rapidly this is more valuable by the day!)

    Hello,

I will be booking my 14 night Virgin holiday to Florida this week for September 2008 however I was wondering if somebody could answer a few questions I have about their 'free' car hire.

Did you get a good deal? Im looking at going with Virgin around this time but I'm holding out for a flights sale in July...hopefully!

Can anybody confirm that there should be a flight sale around this time with Virgin?

    Thanks!

With the Sunday Mail - Virgin sale it is £550pp for 14 nights staying at the Bahama Bay Resort also includes car hire. Not sure even with a flight sale you'll get it any cheaper.

As i'm 24 I have problems with car hire in the US. At the moment i'm considering paying Virgin's £20 per day insurance unless someone has any better ideas. (Really rather not go without car hire)

I dont know whether you know or not you do get the free car hire but insurance is about 250-300 pounds for 2 weeks and you must get the top insurance just make sure you are covered for everything. I went last year i had a minor acciendent phoned dollar rent a car they said you need to phone police for a number so I did as I was told. Cut a long storyshort I had to go to court the next day and also pay a fine. I argued about it what about insurance that i took out did not make a bit of difference. I got fined about 150 pounds. so just be aware but have a good time.

Hi I have just phoned Virgin and they confirm that the car is included but the insurance is £224 for 2 weeks in November and approx £300 in September. This is based on a car for 2 people and the driver over 25 years old.

Has anyone stayed at the Bahama Bay resort as my husband are thinking of booking it for £558 in September but are not sure. We could also stay at the Best western on International drive (next to the Black angus steak house and near the water park) for £210 for the both of us so not too sure what to do.

The flights to Orlando usually go for less than £500 (£400?) in the sale, and im actually going to be going all over florida so don't need/want a hotel for the entire duration in Orlando. Cheaper to do it independently for me. Can't wait though! WOHOO!
  • Another thing to bear in mind with regards to having to pay out for vehicle damage in the event that you are not fully insured is the cost the hire company will charge you for loss of revenue while the car is being repaired.

Even if you only have a minor shunt, the repair might take a fair few days, and you will be billed for this time if it is outside of your prepaid rental period.

You will not be charged a discount rate, but will get hit for the maximum that the rental company could get for the car during this period.
