the fact is you are in the huff yet have no answers
as far as you are concerned any carrier should deal with HMRC for you and do this for nothing
HMRC are seperate to the carriers, having to deal with them must generate costs over and above the standard business0 -
Don't be silly custardly. They should provide this service free of charge. After all they are collecting fees, informing the customer of the fees, storing the goods, and delivering the goods on behalf of customs. Good grief, why on earth should they charge a fee for doing so little? Although I still think it's a wee bit dearer than needed4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0

The words troll, anorak, geek and no lifer comes to mine
I await your courtcase with eagerness and hope you have very deep pockets (as it will cost you more than £8)
Oh and how did you know? i'm very proud to be a Geek0 -
As this thread was started in November 2007 we can only assume that all those who have been moaning about these charges have been unsuccessful with their complaints to get the charge dropped or maybe Trading Standards and the courts and still deliberating?0

I expect that those who are complaining that an £8 admin fee is unjustified have no experience of running a business, and the costs associated with it. I would not be surprised if the real cost is far more than £8.0

much in the same way as people whos wages are paid late into there accounts due to banking faults and go overdrawn £0.50p for a few days and get £20 pound notice charge right?
The point you seem to be missing is that there is no reason except for financial gain for rm to be operating there system as it is.
My parcel should have been delivered to my door in the usual manner, there was no reason to add tracking unless rm or hm customs consented to paying the costs, the parcel is already insured by the sender.
further more full opportunity should be given for the reciever to pay outstanding duty in the first instance at the doorstep with maybe a reasonable money handling charge levied by RM.0 -

delivery staff dont handle money,so thats out for a start
so at least you now mention HMRC
so what happens when a packet is removed from the mail stream by customs?
that involves staff and costs to RM
shall we just have it that customs remove the package and hold it,then you can pay HMRC direct and then pay for delivery from them?0 -

now how did i now that would crop up. work for a union by any chance..
you keep mentioning removing from the mail stream as though its a huge expense. it is not, costs are met by duty payed to the revenue in the first place. parcels then go back into exactley the same stream after a customs noticed is affixed then they get to there respected sorting offices in exactley the same way as normal mail.At this point the 8 pounds gets added in the collection office and a notice sent out to the customer.
tracking is a unneeded and unasked for expense.
you can justify rm all you like. the blame lies with them.0 -

union? my we do have a chip on our shoulder dont we
staff dont handle cash at the door for their safety and to ensure people dont have some random asking for money at the door
you know all those pensioners who get scammed at the door?
how about someone in a blue shirt shows up with a card and parcel saying they owe £20
oh well it must be right as its the post office
again where do the costs paid to HMRC cover RM's costs?
who removes the package
you think its one guy standing sorting packages and handing them over to one guy from customs?
think this place runs on £8?

you live in an interesting world
at any point where handling is increased then costs increase,im sure you see the logic?0 -

What does a union have anything to do with it ? There are 2 damn good reasons posties don't collect cash - firstly it removes the opportunity for scammers to con people out of cash and secondly it removes some of the fear of posties getting mugged. I'm sure any reasonable person would support this, I certainly do (not a postie or working for a union).0
