correspondence sent first as per postcomm instructions.

If you cant see how immoral it is to charge £8 on a £4 original debt when handling fee's are easily avoidable then i dont know whats wrong with you.

This charge is because of royal mails inflexability and nothing to do with real costs despite what others may say.

The pro royal mail stance taken by others just dont wash with me, sorry.

something tells me that even if i get a refund and provide evidence you would be sceptical

And for the record i never made a purchase outside the eu, my package was a gift from Switzerland a country within Europe but not a European Union member. The sender marked the gift with its value according to the rules playing fair, whereby they could have merely cheated and customs would have been none the wiser.

£23 or £17 not much in it, but enough to make the difference. Neither party were aware of rm customs "Handling" charges at the time.

The actual duty owed has never been the issue.

Royal mails current system of revenue collection charges will only encourage people who need to send low value items that are close to the minimum duty threshold of £18 to devalue there goods. Thus the revenue will actually loose out long term.

Its clear that either hm customs should raise there threshold so that money owed is at least matched to the charges imposed by royal mail for services rendered or that royal mail should charge accordingly to revenue owed.

    Thats all gents.

To be honest with you, it doesn't matter how the package is marked, if customs choose to check it, the duty and handling charge will be charged on it. RM will not have different price structures, would cost too much to implement. £8 is there charge, if u don't like it, don't pay it, your item will make it's way back to the sender eventually. Then they can try and get it through customs again.

Had 1 poor woman at christmas who had ordered from Amazon.com instead of uk, ended up with a high fee to pay due to importing goods, just for a couple of dvds.

Another woman ordered 6 dvds from ebay. They sent them marked as gifts, and had a value on them. Customs disagreed, as they came in 3 packages she got charged the £8 three times. So you see, it doesn't matter whether they are marked or not. If customs decide to take a look, then there will be a charge to pay, no matter what's marked on the packet.

    .

It is the responsibility of the person receiving a parcel to pay for import charges or any other associated costs. Ignorance of that fact does not give you the right to have the charge/s waived. Take this one on the chin and be more aware next time.

hardly ignorance. when the system is blatantly unfair with no possiblity of paying the taxes due without incurring "fees"

btw when you get a notice through the door it mentions only about duty owed. It's not untill you have paid and collected that you realise you have been stiffed, at which point it is to late to do anything about it.

ask for it to be returned to HMRC and take it up with them
they will know exactly which package as you can give them that superfluous tracking number
