  • It's simple. Just self declare.
  • Oh my God! What a genius idea! FYI, I can't just "buy from UK based companies" because the items are only available from this US store. I love how everyone thinks they're an expert and that I'm just totally clueless when really, some of you are as misinformed as I am.

I buy tools that aren’t available in the UK anymore for one of my hobbies, I factor in import taxes, duty and clearance fees, it means I get the items quickly and don’t have to deal with clearance myself.

Yes it's out of order! Yet they get away with it. I blame the EU! Correct me if I'm wrong, but it says on the packet that these charges happen when goods are imported into the EU!

I purchased 2 items costing $69 and paid for shipping with USPS - First-Class Package International Service at $24 and then Royal Mail wouldn't deliver until I had to pay £20.47 !!
Thats VAT and £8 Royal Mail Internation handling fee!

It's a disgrace! I hope this will change when we exit the EU and hopefully Boris and Trump will see sense of arranging a better trade deal between the US and the UK.

    PS
Yes, I know Extortionate is spelt wrong :-) I rushed the reply, and it's The Royal Mail Handling Fee that we are objecting too, as well as the VAT.

So let me get this straight. You blame the EU because you bought an item from outside the EU, which incurred import charges because it was from outside the EU?
You are now you are wanting to leave the EU and increase the countries you are liable for import charges for?
More so you think Boris will broker a better deal with the US when it is the UK that levies the VAT regardless of the country bought from.
Ah the classic little Englander surfaces....

Almost every country in the world has import taxes, while we are in the EU we have an agreement that if importing between member countries that there is no import tax due, when we leave we will no longer have this tax free luxury and will still have to pay import tax on everything we do now but will also have to pay it on imports from the EU member countries that we currently don't have to pay for. It doesn't matter what trade deal is agreed with trump, if you import you are not paying VAT so they add it on as import tax instead, even with a trade deal that may change tariffs there will still be tax to pay and unless you self declare there will still be handling fees from the couriers who clear your goods through customs so you don't have to (or didn't bother to as it has to be arranged before being sent)

But I guess technically you hopes of things changing will come true, it's just in this case it will change for the worse not the better.
  • Hi, to save me scrolling through 75 pages,  can anyone advise if, once HMRC confirm Import VAT was incorrectly charged, I can reclaim the £8 Royal Mail handling charge ? Almost £15 out of my pocket just because a civil servant can't do their job properly !!!

No. As an importer, you are responsible for the VAT Duty, and the handling fee for doing this. You can of course avoid these costs next time by going to collect your item at the port of entry and doing the BAY Duty clearance yourself.
