My friend has the htc wildfire and though its not as good as the likes of the iphone and higher end smartfones it seems good value for what it is around £150.

Partner got the Wildfire - hated it, returned after a few days: very low res screen (comparable to old non-smartphones!) and poor performance (laggy navigating screens etc). Too underpowered to run Swype without lag. :(

On the plus side, they're dirt cheap. We saw deals for ~£7.99pm after cashback, on T-mobile Web 600 (600m, 500txt, 500MB data)! Compare that to ~£16pm cheapest for the Desire (with same plan - generally the cheapest data/600m plan avail). I believe the Wildfire 2 is meant to be an improvement.

Personally I went for Samsung Galaxy S on Web 600 plan - £19.89pm for 18 months via Mobiles.co.uk (+TCB), absolutely fantastic phone - better screen than the Desire, bigger screen, more storage, etc etc. HTC Sense UI is better than Samsung TouchWiz, but I just switched to LauncherPro, which free and beats both. :D

Agreed the wildfire obviously isnt as good as the higher end phones, I too have the samsung galaxy s and I love it, runs great on the latest software but you obviously have to pay for these hence why a cheaper phone like the wildfire is a good compromise for those not looking to pay much, get on the web and not have to remember to get cashback claims etc. If peeps can be bothered with the cashback claims then Id certainly recommend the samsung galaxy S :)
  • If you can't get a contact mobile then the new Fresh rate from Three lets you buy a stretch top up for £15.00 which gives you 300 anytime minutes and 300 3 to 3 calls. Every bit as good as a contract and no credit check.I ask as it would suit me and the missus down to the ground - save us a fortune compared to the Three tariffs we're currently on. But Vodafone seem to want to hide it away (you'll have to do a search on the website to find it).

My old mobile died and while I have a backup it's a pretty basic Nokia so I'm trying to work out what is the best upgrade path.

Currently I send maybe 50 or so texts a month but make very few calls. However, I've struck lucky in that a good few years back I bought an Orange 5-texts-a-day-for-a-year upgrade which I gather due to some error on their part they can't remove. Therefore, I only top up maybe £15-20 per year at best. I'm on a very old Orange tariff though so calls and excess texts are fairly expensive.

I am interested in upgrading to a smart phone. It would be useful to me to have mobile internet but it is unlikely to be something I would use a lot. It is hard to tell when I don't have it but I suspect at first I'd use it for the novelty value but then only for checking emails etc when I'm away from home.

What I can't decide is whether to go contract or stay PAYG as well as working out what looks like a good, basic phone for what I want. I'd like a reasonable (3M or so) camera but other than that I don't need bells and whistles. Basic mobile internet would be more than good enough.

If it makes any difference I'm a Virgin Media customer so can access their special offers.

I would probably avoid the more complex cash-back deals as I'm quite likely to forget to claim.

    Any suggestions most appreciated!
Have a look at Asda Mobile website - their PAYG calls cost 8 pence a minute, texts are 4 pence and internet is 20p a Mb plus they do bolt ons for special requirements. You only top up when you've run out of credit and the coverage is good - they use the Vodafone network. Their phones are more expensive than Tesco's but I think they come unlocked so you are not tied to their network if you change your mind later - but check that out before you buy to get the latest terms and conditions.
  • I'm considering getting a contract blackberry. I am currently a PAYG orange customer, and last topped up £10 in December. I now really want to use a phone for internet access and e-mail. I have been looking for a while. I don't really want to change providers - but probably will.
Today the local Virgin store has an offer of a free Blackberry for £7.50pm - 50 mins, 250 texts and free internet and BBM. The downside being it's a reconditioned phone. Interested to know what everyone things. The alternative is the same contract for £12.?? with a new Blackberry.

My experience is that phones are only built to last a certain time and my last 2 Blackberrys have started to develop niggles after a year and are ready to give up the ghost after about 18-20 months. That's what makes me reluctant to enter a 24 month contract and, in relation to what you were saying, get a reconditioned phone. It may just be me but I think I'd go for a new one every time!

Doesn't need to be new, I take it the model is NLA?
I had my son's hand-me-downs for some years, but now he has these things that need a week's course to fathom.
    Thxs:)

EDIT:- just looked at one. it's a smart phone. I don't need that essexman.

I'm quite happy with the models 1110 & even older 3000? series. I just would like a camera added.
