  • I pay my mum £160 a month i earn around £950 but the rest of that goes on loan payments etc
I would pay more if i could afford too, My mum used to have a low paid job and has since got a better paid job by the sum of £300 i will still happily pay her the same amount of money she's bought me and my sister up on her own and still is a single parent

I just think i'm at home and i use the electricity the food everything else so i would never say no to paying rent

I also pay the internet bill myself solely purely because i'm on there so much
  • Daughter is still with me at 25 so she definately pays. Not a huge amount as she should be saving up for a deposit for her own place. Son is a uni and has a part-time job, he's living away from home and therefore learning to live off grant and his wages, which is no bad thing. If children aren't taught about the value of money, how are they gonna manage it in the future?.

I wouldn't want to charge my children for the pleasure I would get from them living with me.

And they were ok with this?

I've had a quick scan through this thread - really interesting - so apologies if this has been said before. I didn't pay my parents anything many moons ago before I left home, but to be honest I wish I had. I wish I'd left home used to the fact that my take home pay minus paying for my keep what what I had to spend. I might have got into less trouble in later life. Now I've learnt the hard way to stand on my own two feet, and I will be out of non-mortgage debt at the end of this year, and I am determined never to get back into debt. Wish I'd learned my lesson earlier so I could now be looking forward to early retirement, rather than however much longer at a job I now hate.
Surely part of a parent's job is to educate their children, and teaching them financial management is vital in my opinion.
It's been a long time since I thought going back to live with my parents was viable - the cemetary gets really cold this time of year! Being able to rely on yourself is the best thing you can ever know, I think.

Yes as long as I completed my A levels any money I earn was mine. My parents didn't need the money still don't. Dads pension alone is more than we get for a family of four even though it lost a lot of its value when the matkets crashed. When I left school they didn't lose any benefits or suchlike as they wern't entitled to anything exept family allowance which they got till I moved out anyway.
