Older child new job starting Monday, 10% rent = £20 a week = £1040 a year.
Was asked tonight if we would like it in cash or by transfer from his bank account!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So proud0 -
I think it shouldn't matter whether the parent(s) involved can afford to subsidise their children or not. You should be teaching them the value of money and how much bills are when they want to move out. If its handed to them on a plate, it will be that much harder for them when they move out and will tend to keep coming back for handouts when in trouble. Just my opinion anyway.

I agree with that.
I live at home with parents, I pay £300 per month plus the phone/internet bill. My sister pays £150 (younger, just started work, earns a lot less etc). Of course I wish it was free to live here but I pay roughly 20% of my take home which is not even half of what I'd be paying out to live elsewhere. I can't really afford rent/mortgage on my own so it's the only option.0 -
I work in a children's home & our young people have to pay all they recieve less 2x the pocket money allowance for their age plus £5 a week clothing money (????)
Is complicated, but I believe the sentiment is right .. you earn.. you contribute, but you are better off working than doing nowt!!0 -
Learning to budget goes both ways. When I was at home I used to pay £20 a week (had been £25 but reducing it was the only way I could get back some money I had lent mum), and various bills that came to apx £85 a month. It wasn't a huge amount but considering I was at work the majority of the time, and when I was there I basically lived on soup, it wasn't costing £20 a week to keep me.
I haven't lived at home for nearly 2 years now but I'm still paying them £60 a month in bills because they can't afford them.1st April 2008 challenge:mad: xmas overspend = [strike]£254.05[/strike] £0:j......cc1 = [strike]£240.78[/strike] £0:j .......cc2 = [strike]£667.47[/strike] £0 :j ...amount owed to ISA = [strike]£1599.90[/strike] £0:jTOTAL TO GO = [strike]£2762.20[/strike] £0 !!! DONE IT DONE IT DONE IT!!!:dance:0 -
How can a supposedly grown up live with parents who are financially stretched and do nothing to help aleviate that situation by paying for their own keep. Sorry if this is judgemental and harsh but they obviously put themselves and their own needs before their love for their parents. I would hate to have reared children this selfish as I would see this as a failure on my part. I am glad to hear that your son has seen the light Jacks. Good on you for showing him the way to independance. And well done to all the others who accept responsibility for themselves now that they are earning. Isn't that what being grown up is all about.Mortgage and Debt free but need to increase savings pot. :think:0

i wish i get my sister to see this! she's older than me and lives at home paying a paltry £50 a month... i'm completely financially independent and really resent having to have long phone calls with my mum about money problems while she has a nice cheap life! i've mentioned it but it went down badly and I can hardly force them to make her pay more.
i hate the fact that if she had some idea of responsibility she would pay, and also that her life is being subsidised while i don't have that luxury (isn't sibling jealousy a horrible thing - i wish it didn't bother me in that sense, but have to admit that it does!).
and because i can't talk to my parents about it, it just knaws at me on the inside! nearly lost my temper hearing my sister complain that the broadband was too slow the other day...... if you don't bloody pay it seems so rich to be complaining!
anyway, rant over! i'm so pleased for Jacks that her son is now appreciating the cost of everyday things. (and i'm tempted to print out the pricelist and leave it in my parents' house..... but i know it would cause world war 3!):happyhear0 -

That is outrageous!!!!! I wouldn't be able to keep quiet about it, I know an easy life is tempting sometimes to keep the peace, but she is taking the pis& out of your parents and they will never get rid of her...
