I wouldn't charge at all but OH is adamant our children will pay their way so as a compromise they WILL pay but I'll put the money they give us away into a savings account for them and give it to them back when they get married or move into their own place. It will be a few years yet though.

  • I don't even need to read the thread. If any child of mine had a proper job and lived with us they would pay board. No questions asked.

  • Yep I think they should. My niece used to give my sister a really hard time about paying keep but my sister stuck to her guns and took 25% net salary per month. My niece had sinced moved in with her boyfriend and has now realised what a good deal she was getting whilst living at home!

I like the idea of saving it and giving it back to them as a lump sum when they buy or rent their own home. But not telling them this is going to happen. Only if you can afford to do this though.

Ooops I just posted on the other thread.

Basically I said yes they should definitely be charged but make it realistic based on their earnings.

How else will kids learn about their budget & responsibilities?

Mum made us pay as soon as we were working and it was a decent amount, not just a token amount but, affordable.

Although I managed to get on the slippery debt slope as soon as I was 18, I still always knew the rent (mortgage now) had to be paid and it was my no. 1 priority. Obviously this is something that's stayed with me since then and I am sure it is the same for everyone.

Can I ask why you wouldn't charge? Just interested in hearing a different opinion to mine.

    Thanks

  • When I was at home & working, I paid a days salary a week to my mum & when mine worked & were at home I did the same. Sadly they have all cleared off to Uni & I get nothing!! I don't think it is helpful to them to live rent free. Especially if you are DFW..... what are you doing subsidising their drinking/clubbing/having fun........ (oh dear does that sound a bit grim, not meant to be)

I always had to pay a third of my take home ! and it was the same for my 2 brothers, at one point we were all working whilst living at home and my parents must have been raking it in ! (all 3 of us paying a third each) !!!

However now I'm paying about 3/4 of my take home on just the Mortgage :(

My parents charged me board as soon as I got my first "proper" job.

To be honest I never thought anything of it and just accepted it as the norm. Its what they had done with my sister and what all my friends did.

I was more than happy to pay it as my mum was a diamond and really looked after me :D

I will definately be doing the same with my kids. Although have quite a few years before I have to worry about that lol.

I Charged mine 10 % 0f their income a week as I felt they had to realise that the roof over their head was not free, However i then put the money into a high interest savings account which I could give them to pay the deposit /rent in advance when they left home.

It was not until the last one left that i let them know it was there own money they had back and that I wasn't the most generous mum in the world.

Whilst they did not think it was funny at first, they then thanked me for making them save in this way.

I am a child (ok and adult one) that still lives at home and I pay Mum £207.50 a month. This is towards keep and food and I also pay half of the sky subscription.

I realise that this is cheap and would happily give her more, but she wont take any more as she would rather I paid off my debt quicker.
