There are some lucky kids out there! I pay my mum £50 a week and I'm not even sure thats enough considering council tax, electric, gas, water, food etc etc. I pay for my own car, phone and internet. I'd give her more if I could afford it, but I know she wouldn't take it.

On the other hand, my brother lives with my father and has a better paid job than me, yet pays nothing at all...

Good for you. I'm sure he will moan and groan but you are going to teach him something and if you save some for him that would be great too. For the first 19 years he was a child with child benefit or tax credits that helped with his upkeep - earning £1000 he should be able to contribute as an adult.
  • I always paid my mum a third of what I earned....I moved out quick mind - hee hee
  • I never paid but I left home at 18 and went straight to university - after graduation I took a year out and worked for 6 months (but still didn't pay rent - but I wasn't asked - my parents knew I was saving up). I suppose it's down to the reason for paying board? Are your children saving for anything special (own car, year out, gap year, driving lessons and proably uni debt etc) and if they paid rent would you then have to pay for these things? I learnt money management when I left home but many friends who stayed at home are in serious debt - others have been bailed out by their parents and at 34 - I still feel that's unfair because my parents won't lend me a thing!

I resented it because my sister was never made to pay and ended up living at my parents till she was over 30 years old.

Which is the best motivation I think to make sure they pay a bit!! :D Its too easy otherwise.

  • When I lived at home and worked, I paid board. I paid £80 a month, erm, 10 years ago. My youngest brother (22) still lives at home now and pays £30 a week (I think, maybe a little bit more).

I would expect my kids to pay board as well if they were working full time and living at home.

We-ell... after reading both the threads I started on this topic (I'm SO greedy!) my son IS going to pay some "keep" but we're still negotiating the amount.

His opening offer was £12.50 a week - which he thinks is quite generous given that none of his mates - including his 21 years old and working full time girlfriend - have to pay a penny in their houses - and in fact, seem to be constantly getting parental hand outs if DS is to be believed.

I think it's a pretty low ball offer in view of the fact that we used to give him twice that just to pay for for food every week when he was at college and this "keep" is s'posed to be a contribution to the bills etc as well.

(It's funny how £25 was never enough when it was going one way but it's extortion when the money is changing hands in the opposite direction huh?! :D:p )

But it's a starting point....

We are definitely in need of any extra money, and it'll help make a man of him I hope - like Geordie Joe mentioned. (Although in a weird Mum way I quite like it when he's calling "What's for tea?" when he's barely inside the door yet so I hope he doesn't grow out of that too fast. :o )

He is the most vociferous defender of the Sky + and the super fast broadband when they look to be in danger from my budget cuts so maybe he can help pay for them!

The accounts dept at work have told him that they don't expect him to pay tax until next March so he's got £1166 "pocket money" to play with every month. (plus he got a £230 JSA payment this month that he would never have got if I hadn't made him go down there. Although bless him, he wrote to them and said he'd got a job now and did they want it back! :p )

He can spare a few quid to help with the bills then huh? ;)

    Love Jacks xxx :D

PS We worked out How much a 10%, 20%, 25% and a third would be and he visibly paled as the numbers got bigger and bigger. (We also talked about him paying on a piecemeal basis for services rendered - such as "Service Washes, Ironing services, Cleaning services, Taxis. Meals etc so that in theory he could pay less if he did his own laundry for example. But he doesn't want to do his own laundry (or any of that stuff) and he makes heavy use of Mum & Dads Taxi service so he got us off that idea pretty quickly!)

(He could see that shiny Peugeot 206, huge plasma screen and Wii slipping rapidly away from him as we talked!)

My eldest daughter who is 22 pays me £40 per week and my 19 year old daughter pays £25 per week.
I save the money they give me in a special account which pays for my husband and mines holidays, which we need because they are still living at home and having everything done for them, when my husband and I both left home by 19 and were paying a mortgage and all the bills at that age.
I cant see them being able to afford buying their own places or even renting one yet, unfortunately, but at least I get my nice holidays courtesy of them (and Clubcard Deals).

I am a child (ok and adult one) that still lives at home and I pay Mum £207.50 a month. This is towards keep and food and I also pay half of the sky subscription.

I realise that this is cheap and would happily give her more, but she wont take any more as she would rather I paid off my debt quicker.

Me too, I am 23 and lived at home up untill 2 yers ago, when i first started working at 16 i only earned £50 a week, cant remember wot i paid Mum but she did take "keep" off me every week, when i got a proper job i paid more and then it started going up and up unitll she wanted half of everything so i jumped ship and moved out now i am skint lol!!!

I think it is very important to take some money from your children because it teaches them the value of money.
  • Jacks you're too soft on him! If he's getting £1100 a month he should pay you at least £200 & I'd go for £300 myself if youre doing cookng ironing etec. If he doesent feel the pich there'll never be incentive to leave plus if he wants sky & you & OH want rid of he should pay or it should go, simple as that! Go on girl you can do it!! Tough love its called & he'll thank you n the end. Also a reminde that he lives in YOUR house, not elsewhere wouldnt go amis and will remind him that some things never change...you could also use terms like "you use this house lik a hotel" to ensure that the age old agruments/statements continue!
