what is the import duty on apple phones? what is the VAT? i am pretty sure it is not 30% otherwise all other goods coming into the uk would be 1:1

Well VAT is 20% for a start. Import duty is 2.5%. Many goods are pretty much a 1:1. I buy a lot of amateur radio gear from the USA and that tends to be applied to that. Things like buying PS4 and XBox One games online are also 1:1.

I can never understand those statistics. I always think of Apple as a great american product for americans but they don't favour them as much as the UK.

Where you are getting those numbers?

According to respected industry source (IDC) Apple are running at 12.1 % of global smartphone shipments in Q2 18.

I'd be interested to see your source of UK/US numbers, as I've never seen Apple that high before.

Oh dear, denigrating someone because of a spelling mistake, a sure sign of a lost argument. Can't believe you missed "undefencible" though. :p

I like how you missed my open line of “no one has to defend anything” which is why I highlighted the word. I make spelling mistakes so I’m the last person to highlight others spelling mistakes. It was an unfortunate coincidence :)

I got a Motorola phone for £130. Made by Lenovo. When I was at work someone was doing a crossword and wanted to know what a word meant. I just said "OK Google" and asked the question. The answer was perfect and I thanked her and had a bit of small talk. Suddenly all these people around were shouting Hi Siri at their phones but none of them were working. I couldn't believe how much better my cheap phone was in comparison with the iPhones costing at least four times as much.
My wife's Russian and Google Assistant can understand her accent without any issues.

I don't know about Siri, we've never tried it.

As was intimated earlier, the US price is also subject federal and state sales taxes. So $1500 could easily be over $1,900, making the pricing similar to the UK price.

(I'm making no comment regarding value).

I did wonder it it was these stats, as I admit I do have a problem with them.
For instance in 2011 the majority of phonse sold in the UK were on flavours of Symbian, as shown in:
    https://www.statista.com/statistics/266219/global-smartphone-sales-since-1st-quarter-2009-by-operating-system/

(remembering far more feature phones were sold in 2011 than smartphones, and these are not included), so even from Statista's own figures this UK Mobile O/S graph is wrong.

Hence you can see the problem with these "53% Apple" claims for the UK, it just doesn't stand up to what you see on the high street or showroom.

Happy to be proved wrong ...:rotfl:
