I would gently remind the neighbours that, as windows are made to open and close, that can shut it if the smoke upsets them...

And then, I as I am like that, would take up the bagpipes...

Its your garden, and you can do what you want in it within reason, and having the odd (or many) fag falls well within reasonable behaviour.
At times any combination of my spelling, grammar or punctuation may be incorrect. Please do not pick me up for this as, after all, it is only an internet forum.

Surely Op, considering the pain of flagellation, it would be easier to stop smoking? Just a thought.

Does that not depend on the OP's individual tastes? They can whip themselves all they like (to death, for all I care) so long as they are quiet about it and do not disturb the neighbours. They can inflict all the damage they like on themselves; they have no right whatsoever to inflict it on anyone else.

Smoking does affect the neighbours. Why does anyone think it acceptable to force their neighbours to close their windows when they want them open? Why?

smoke IN your house? Oh you don't like the smell. Now you know how others feel.
  • OP you crack on. It's your garden and I don't think you're being unreasonable. I am an ex smoker and daily I have the smell of weed and cigarette smoke drifting in. The smell doesn't last that long and I don't complain, tut or noisily close the windows. Your neighbors are being over sensitive.

I do hope that this autumn is productive on the nut collecting front.

I genuinely think its a lot of fuss about nothing but it seems I am in minority. The only reason I asked was i was taken aback by her demand we stop as I've never encountered this before. Thanks all :)

Sounds like you are getting a bit touchy now. If you don't want to have your house stinking of smoke buy a golf umbrella & move away from the child's window.
You are coming across as very selfish.

    Hi,

I’m a former smoker (gave up for a few years then after some stress at work am now vaping. I don’t smoke sweet fruity flavours or preach the benefits, it is just cheaper and less harmful. The truly insufferable people are the holier then thou former smokers).

Yes as a smoker you are nowhere near as sensitive to the small as former/non-smokers so a path to covered seat for winter would probably be best. As someone who used to go outside in a coat to smoke on a wet winter evening, a covered seating area would have been great. I was just too lazy to sort it out back when I smoked (would buy/build one now if I started again).

That said if they still complain I wouldn’t do anything further. If they are truly awkward I’d go back to smoking where you smoked before. I kind of agree with spadoosh with of not pandering to every whim of an awkward neighbour, but only after you have taken a reasonable step to reduce your impact on them. Meet them half way this time and see how it goes.

Smoking is legal outside and your neighbour is free to close their window. Do what you want in your own garden.
