Smoking in garden

Is there views that there is no such thing as society? Ive not come across that before.."They are casting their problems at society. And, you know, there's no such thing as society. There are individual men and women and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look after themselves first. It is our duty to look after ourselves and then, also, to look after our neighbours." – in an interview in Women's Own in 19870

"Nuisance" normally doesn't kill you. Passive smoke does.
You missed the point entirely, nuisance is subjective.
Id have no issue with the neighbour smoking in their garden at all.
In fact im pretty sure the vast majority of people in the country would allow it to happen. Even if they disliked it.
Lets get to the killing people. Passive smoking kills an estimate 1000 people in the UK. Mainly those who live with smokers. air pollution kills an estimated 80,000. I drive far less than the average person. Do you think i should expect everyone else to live and meet my standards for my health?
Tell you what, when youve reduced your consumption and put more attention in to the damage you cause simply by living your life the way you do, ill stop smoking.
Youre literally using a computer that has contributed to the shortened life of someone else to post your virtue signalling comment. It uses electricity, most likely from fossil fuels. Of which the extracting of which is detrimental to local populations. The components are made using large amounts of energy usually derived from fossil fuels also. It will also use cheap labour (at the expense of HSE) to mine the neodynium magents in your hard drive, something which the process poisons those who gather it. Youve got an SSD? Microchips containing similar rare earth metals that poison those who collect it for you are also coated in silicon and plastic.
But.... but .... but... everyone does that and im ignorant or dont care because i really need it. Sure dude. I need a smoke!0 -
Why? Because i simply do not care what a neighbour thinks i should do on my own property.
Courtesy works both ways, commenting on how people live is simply not courteous.
Its not for me to dictate how others live. My neighbour has had a wasp nests that is pretty near my daughters bedroom window. Im sure some would ask the neighbour to get it removed etc etc. The simplest solution by far though and completely removes the need to rely on anyone else but myself is to just close her bedroom window.
It always comes down to people looking down on others for how they live. The issue i always see with this is i can find fault in every single person, rip them to shreds, nullify any argument or stance they might take. When they can match my utopian standards, they have every right to expect me to meet theirs. At the moment though theyre alwyas hypocritical.
Youre just showing your intolerance.
The best thing about fascist people is they cant help but expose them self.
Yes, you are so right, you have exposed yourself as a... Well, you're not worth getting PPR-ed over, are you? And I thought we had the neighbour from hell; oh wait, we do. Pretty sure she's not you though as she is nowhere near as articulate.0 -

It is an (in)famous quote made by Margaret Thatcher (former British Prime Minister):
Coincidentally i was born in 1987.
Nah never heard it before. Id need more context to align with it but on face value it doesnt seem too far out. I do particularly like the 'its our duty to look after ourselves... and then. But as mentioned im struggling with regards to the context.
It sounds along the lines of 'let he who is free from sin cast the first stone'. Or modern venacular, sort your own life out before judging others.0 -

Quote:For the issue to count as a statutory nuisance it must do one of the following:
- Unreasonably and substantially interfere with the use or enjoyment of a home or other premises
- Injure health or be likely to injure health0 -

Nah im definitely not.
My neighbours like me. I dont go around telling them how to live their life. I simply highlight the period of day (morning, afternoon, evening) and maybe throw a comment in about the weather.
My other neighbour is one of my best mates. We do neighbourly stuff like parties, meals, giving food/stuff to each other, watching each others properties. Normal neighbourly stuff. Hes never once told me what to do and ive never once told him what to do.0 -
Yes, precisely. That's why is not 'just' nuisance. If one of your kids had severe asthma, would you move home? If your wife was pregnant, would you not care about someone smoking right next to her? Would you call it 'subjective nuisance'?
Id close my daughters window (before the comment about stale air, theres others windows, not to mention lots of solutions) and my wife would move away from the person smoking next to her. I wouldn't call it anything. For what it's worth: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/statutory-nuisances-how-councils-deal-with-complaints

By all means go for it.
Ill give you quote from one of my favourite films. You see, according to Cocteau's plan I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think; I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech and freedom of choice. I'm the kind of guy likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder - "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecued ribs with the side order of gravy fries?" I WANT high cholesterol. I wanna eat bacon and butter and BUCKETS of cheese, okay? I want to smoke Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section. I want to run through the streets naked with green jello all over my body reading playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly might feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiener"
People want to do all the controlling but they dont have a clue what the end result will be, they dont even know what theyd like it to be.0 -
Does your neighbour get involved in your daily activities? If not, then why should he tell you what to do?
Yeh, hell come in to my garden if were out to borrow the mower. Hell come on my property to take the bins out and return them. Ill enter his to borrow garden tools as required. If my OH is away hell make sure i get fed (im not incapable im just not a one person cook, id just snack). If he wants to go away he can rely on me to watch his dog.
Were good neighbours, everybody needs good neighbours, with a little understanding you can find the perfect bleeeennnnnndddd! Neighbours should be there for one another, thats when good neighbours become good friends.
Neither complain so im doing alright i think. But then none of us feel a need to comment on how the others live their life so it was always going to be pretty amicable.0
