"Nice overhanging tree you've got their, neighbour! Shame if someone were to trim the everloving snot out of it, returning the trimmings to you as per the law, eh?"

This makes me laugh as one of the lines on our recent Home Buyers report noted that next door has a (very thin) tree that has the possibility to overhang and that they recommend we get an arborist out to look at it as branches could fall off and land on someone's head. :rotfl:

Maybe the problem is that you think everyone just eats cheap burgers and sausages like your good self. You really should get out more. BBQs grill you know?? lol

Theyre too righteous for burgers and sausages, its tofu and Heather McCartney 'sausages' for them.

    I knew it too. :rotfl:

If you're burned at the stake PLEASE tell the neighbours first so they can close their windows.

We lived in a mid terrace a while ago. Unfortunately we didn't get on with one set of neighbours. OH lit a small fire in a small incinerator. Neighbour didn't like it so he called the fire brigade:eek:. They were really nice and explained they would have to put it out which they did. Just after they left the fire reignited:rotfl:

I appreciate it probably wasn't funny but it seemed so at the time. The fire station was only a few hundred yards away so if they had another call it wouldn't have delayed them too much.

Neighbour picked on us again and threatened OH with physical violence. We found somewhere else to live and are now happy as clams

Answer the question and ill agree with it. I suspect you cant give an answer though.

Thats the reality of the situation. Im not a dreamer of fantasist. I appreciate we could live in a world where people are courteous of others etc but unfortunately, at least for me anyway, thats not a world i live in.

Yes i pick up litter, yes i dont go out of my way to harm others. Yes i try and be considerate when smoking, i do voluntary work and make charitable donations. I try and look after the vulnerable. etc etc etc but then im happy buying my ps4 which i know effects the lives of others (rare earth metal mining) happy to drive me car as and when needed (by my definition of need, i do try to reduce it by cycling my 13 mile commute)

This social responsibility you talk of though simply does not exist as an ingrained part of human nature. If it was, we wouldnt have wars, people wouldnt go hungry, wouldnt be poisoned by my desire to have a mobile phone.

I do believe that no one has any responsibility towards others. Some take the responsibility upon them self (me included.... to a level) but then others just completely abstain them self from it. So no i dont think we all have a responsibility to others. Some choose to take on that responsibility others do not.

"No man is an island ..."

    John Donne 17th century

The phrase no man is an island means that no one is truly self-sufficient, everyone must rely on the company and comfort of others in order to thrive.

Well, this thread was a fun read through what a rollercoaster.

OP, I think it just comes down to what type of person you want to be. Of course we all have opinions about everything. The neighbours may be fussy and even down right bumholes, at the same time this summer was brutally hot and closing windows is a rough choice to make in that heat. It's unfortunate the kids bedroom is the one your smoke reaches, but at the same time it's not the kid's fault her parents are trouble makers.

I'd advise trying to ignore that they're complainers and just focus on the issue at hand, the smoke goes up to the childs bedroom, she has no control over her windows or which room is hers, I know that's on the parents realistically but, you can do something about it too, some "smoking slippers" to let you go out further onto the grass, a small shed etc. Are you willing to make those compromises, not for the parents, but for the kid who has to live with those parents.

If yes, great, if not and you're fine with that then, you're fine with that. That's all it comes down to, face the problem, not the parents and decide how you want to deal with it from there.

There is no risk to the child in my view. A couple of cigs a day, 20 feet away in the open air.

I will bet that if you give in, there will be another demand to stop this or do that in the near future. Its not about what type of person you are or want to become, but more what type of neighbour you neighbour wants.
