My parents smoked in the house when I was a kid and nothing wrong with me - interesting.

So did mine a lot!!, I was consistently ill with chest infections needing antibiotics until I moved out at 20. Guess what I've never had one since. Coincidence? I don't think so!!

I'm aware this situation isn't the same but I'd rather no child breathe any of that stuff in, surely a few feet further away isn't ridiculous?

Sadly smoking related illness caused my mums death at 61, my dad is now on a similar path. So I seriously hate the habit!

    Sorry yes.

Exactly, the same as the reverse.

Are you actually trying to suggest that passive smoking is not harmful? Wow.

The earth is a sphere you know, just in case you weren't up to date on that one either.

It did annoy me, where I once lived, having to pick up the 2 litre Cocacola bottles, made into crack pipes.

That and the stench of other smoked substances often filled my spare bedroom.

So if anyone popped in to visit, I would have to either burn scented candles or admit my substance mis-use habit.

I cant believe that people are really trying to say that second hand smoke isn't dangerous and that the neighbors and being unreasonable asking the OP to not smoke near their CHILD'S bedroom window.

    Losing all faith here.

Ah but they are entitled to smoke in their own garden, aren't they? Who is anyone else to object? No-one else matters when you are entitled, do they, Grezz?

I can't believe this thread is still rumbling along!

I don't believe anyone is trying to suggest that second hand smoke isn't dangerous, but the amount of smoke that will drift in is certainly minuscule and definitely won't be "filling the room"! The child will be breathing in far more harmful toxins from vehicle emissions just by walking down the road.

I get it that the non smokers can smell it far more than those that partake, but OP really shouldn't have to be checking the wind speed and direction in order to smoke a couple of ciggies in her own garden - jeez!

Oh well, as the saying goes "winter is coming"! Problem solved as the window will be shut! No doubt the neighbour will then be finding something else to moan about!!
  • Second hand smoke in large quantities can be dangerous, but the risk is negligible.

Tell them to sod off, nothing to do with them what you do on your property nor can you control wind direction.

I agree OP can do whatever they want in their garden. Im just point out that its not unreasonable to ask them to move, and that some in here who thing its not dangerous are delusional.
  • The smell of cigarette smoke genuinely makes me feel nauseous. I seem to always have had a neighbour who smokes, in almost every house/flat I've lived in!

I simply close the window if I can smell it. If it's the middle of the night I might slam it slightly to make a point but I've never felt the need to complain to my neighbours.

I'd much rather the neighbours smoke outside and inconvenience me slightly, than smoke inside in front of their children/families/pets. I agree people should be able to do what they want in the privacy of their garden. I let my friends have a cigarette in my garden, so I'd be a hypocrite if I asked neighbours to stop.

If it is not tobacco they are smoking, then that's a different story, and I would 100% march over and tell them to stop.
