Smoking in garden

  • Occasional second hand smoke is not dangerous in any way shape or form. Repeated, prolonged inhalation over decades - yes. If that's the case you better take a breathing mask every time you go near a road or car park as the fumes are certain death.

As for if it's "not tobacco", feel free to march over and tell them that substance which is medicinally licensed across the globe better stop being consumed on private property!

What someone chooses to consume on their property is absolutely nothing to do with you and your prejudices.

I don't care what substances people are consuming on their own property, but certain ones absolutely stink and cling to your clothes/curtains/walls! So if their stinky (and illegal!) smoke is coming into my property, it's a problem. You are correct, it has nothing to do with prejudice - it's not prejudice to not want to have to breathe in other people's drugs, and wanting to be surrounded by polite, courteous, law abiding neighbours. From experience, if they are friendly and good people, they won't be offended if you ask them to ensure smoke isn't blowing through neigbouring houses' windows, regardless of the substance.

  • Why does smoking make you presume they aren't polite, courteous, or law abiding? Or for that matter mean OP or any other can dictate what they consume in their garden?

What would you propose OP does in this situation? They're being courteous in smoking in the garden to start with. Would the neighbour who complained do the same to people out on the street I wonder?

Sounds like prejudice to me. Glad you aren't my neighbour!
  • P.S. "if they are friendly and good people, they won't be offended if you ask them to ensure smoke isn't blowing through neigbouring houses' windows" - how do you propose OP does that? Last I checked they can't really control wind direction.

Theres two types of people in this world, problem solvers and problem makers. Problems solvers shut the window, move the child. Problem makers do nothing and complain about it.

Thanks all for the slightly over the top berating of me asking a question, I consider myself well and truly told that I am the one in the wrong, I shall build a smoke proof bunker at the bottom of the garden and flagellate myself with barbed wire for being the most selfish person to walk the earth.
That genuinely made me laugh out loud!

It shows how much attitudes to smoking have changed. My nan used to chain smoke in the house right next to us when we were kids and we hated it but we had to put up with it if my dad wanted to see her. Nowadays parents get upset about some smoke wafting in a window.

In my experience I have sometimes smelled my neigbours cigarette smoke in the garden but not been that bothered or wanted to complain as it's outside. What's worse is a bin full of smouldering garden waste that fills every garden and stinks your whole house out before you can close your windows. I've only complained about that to my wife though!

It could equally be argued that those inconsiderate enough to pollute other people's children's bedrooms on a daily basis are problem makers. Who is some random neighbour to dictate when their neighbours can and cannot have their windows open?

Smokers are by definition inconsiderate. Perhaps so are drivers but unfortunately we no longer have enough green space to sustain sufficient horses to go everywhere by cart.

I appreciate what youre saying. I honestly dont care what peoples opinions are about me smoking. Ive not tried to once suggest that it is considerate.

What ive tried to point out all along that by dictating how someone lives on their own land you are being inconsiderate. This goes completely over your head whilst your too busy jumping on anyone you think is inconsiderate. A considerate person is someone who is careful not to inconvenience or harm others. If someone told me to move where i stand in my garden id consider it an inconvenience and this incosiderate.

Your trying to put yourself on a soap box without realising youre doing the very thing that encourages you to stand on said soap box.

Also notice how your a lot more easly dismissive of stuff that effects you, ie the driving. I mean we really could do something about that, it would result in 80,000 lives not been taken early every year due to pollution. But, and its a big one, its too much inconvenience. Inconveniencing others though, for your benefit, thats ok? So its ok for one person to be inconsiderate based on your perception but not another? Its pretty broken logic that.

But OP/we don't live across the globe, we live in the UK where it's still illegal and not medicinally prescribed.

What someone consumes in their property has something to do with you when the substance consumed is illegal and it's possession is a criminal offence. It's not uncommon for such individuals to hide their stash under the fence in the neighbouring properties, which can make it very much your problem.
