Well, they have a challenge to solve.
I just think it is obvious that a customs border in the SE UK will mean prioritisation of traffic.
This must put British goods first before any through traffic. This is pragmatism.0 -
Yeah the stuff coming from the UK will still need to do so, but if they can cut out the stuff going through the UK it'll make a huge difference.
Surely that way disaster lies since remainers have been telling us that delays caused by customs because of Brexit will lead to disaster for the UK?0 -
It takes longer than currently, sure. But it'll skip 2 customs points which could be a couple of hours each. It'll potentially also skip having to deal with tariffs and rebates, extra paperwork and so on.
Those 22 hours on the boat are time the driver isn't on the tacho, but all that time in customs is. Even if you're shipping unattended and changing drivers, you've still got less driver time.
Longer is bad for everyone, but it might not be that much longer in practise, and could be cheaper than the faster route which will still be open.0 -
Longer means increased costs. Following the opening of the Irish border, the main road from Northern Ireland to London became the motorway to Dublin, followed by the A55 holyhead to Chester. Prior to this, most haulage was via stranraer, then a long grind to Carlisle, after that the M6. It’s cheaper and easier via dublin, but may not be for much longer.

The U.K.’s worst ever Prime Minister advising the second-worst ever Prime Minister. What could possibly go wrong?0 -

And the europeans favour their goods on the other side? Get ready to camp out by the side of the motorway. Food, portaloos.

So Corbyn has tabled a voted no confidence in May over the delayed debate and May has Walked out of Parliament. This could get messy.

Nothing on the BBC yet.0 -

Not a Corbyn fan, but you do wonder why MPs think it is OK to adjourn the House for two weeks without having this vote. It shows contempt for the public.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -

As a country with a longer term plan, it is absolutely stupid to create a bottleneck in the SE of the UK.
The road network could easily log jam in that area in years to come.
We have other ports with potential to expand.
Equally, Ireland is stupidly dependant on goods coming via the UK.
We can easily prioritise local traffic over anything going to Ireland.
What long term plan would that be?There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.0
