I think things would have to get pretty bad before Ireland chose the UK over the EU! Unlike us, they know what its like to genuinely be ruled over by a foreign power.

If as seems likely now some kind of customs union deal is done, Ireland won't be shafted.

They are being ruled over by a foreign power, are they not?

Incidentallt, a source in the Irish Times tells me that moves are afoot to ditch Varadkar for being the EU's poodle.

Of course they're not. You can't call it a foreign power if you're part of it. I think countries like Ireland and the Baltic states with experience within living memory of foreign rule have a much more mature way of looking at it than we do having not had the experience in hundreds of years.

This is how much some loons hate the EU it seems:-
HMRC boss says he received death threats after revealing £20bn cost of Brexiters' favoured customs plan

The head of HM Revenue and Customs reported two death threats to the police after disclosing that a post-Brexit customs option preferred by Brexiters would cost up to £20bn.

Jon Thompson, the UK’s most senior tax official, said today he has been forced to change his personal security and routes to work after telling MPs about HMRC’s appraisal of ‘maximum facilitation’ proposals.

Speaking at the Institute for Government on Thursday, Thompson said disclosing the figures in evidence to the Treasury select committee in May had led to “very significant personal consequences

Yep always thought Donald Tusk was working hand in hand with the Black and Tans. To draw parallels between the record of the British in Ireland with Ireland's relationship with the EU is so off the wall further comment is pointless!

Most of Europe has far more recent experience of 'foreign rule'. See WW II. See the Soviet Bloc. Ireland on the other hand has been independent since 1922. I doubt very much that there is anyone now left with a memory of British rule. :)

I blame the education system. Don't they teach history anymore?

What you say above is true and it changes nothing. The future of the majority is being decided by partisan interest groups. Are you happy with that? Did you consider this outcome when you voted in the referendum? Did people when they voted consider it could lead to the break up of the Union?

    How could we consider it?

Was it mentioned in Cameron's mini pamphlet? I think not.

I couldn't guess the voting pattern of the folks in the neighbouring streets, never mind across the Irish sea!

If Ireland is shafted big way after Brexit, they might decide to quit EU too and go for even closer relationship with UK.

Once UK leaves EU, it is only matter of time further countries leave the bloc.

Yes the UK has been amazing for Ireland. They can’t wait to get back. The US is going to renounce independence at the same time. And so is India, and all the rest of the commonwealth when they all simultaneously remember they loved being brutally oppressed by the British.

Then the colour of the sky in the Brexiteer fantasy land will change from purple to green. It’s going to be a great day, and the Express will be given away free with Pot Noodles, the last British food.

British? Pot Noodles is simply a version of instant noodles, invented by the Japanese Nissin Corp. They are made in Wales though.

Chicken tikka masala. That would be a real British food. :)

    There, much more accurate. ;)

It's strange how some ranting remainers witter on about the potential trade lost by the UK because of Brexit .......... yet ignore the rIrish Republic's €65 billion per year in trade with the UK.
    No risk there at all.
