  • Post #49 - Thanks Everywhere - Clean Install it is - I'm having a short cup of tea break then will start - again!

You'll be needing your holiday more than ever after all this.

  • everywhere & retired surely the same person????? i am confused. images of both holding their passport or i am not convinced.

installing a ssd is not 10+ pages especially for someone clever/lucky enough to retire at 55

I'm definitely slow on the uptake, dipsomaniac, as I (honestly) don't quite understand the passport bit.

I value MSE Techie Stuff so much.

I am 100% different from Everywhere - my poor technical expertise demonstrates it.

I'm very grateful to have been allowed to retire at 55 but owing to a health issue I wouldn't wish on anyone - truly. I'm 70 now and can hardly believe it's 15 years now since my early retirement started.

I'm having a wee break now and will start (restart!) the fresh install soon.

i wouldn't have used that username if it was for health issues. to me its sounded like you were boasting. but that is distracting from the issue

I'm a bit stuck. I changed the boot option in BIOS to ODD selecting it. I keep being sent back to my normal log in screen instead of the display to follow on screen instructions to do the clean install from the DVD in the ODD.

Is there a way, at this point, of knowing if I am installing from the DVD or from the HDD? I have not been asked for my 8.1 Product Key and that makes me think I am not docing a fresh install from the DVD.

So far - I logged in and (again) put the DVD in the drive. A blue window came up this time asking what I wanted to do with the DVD and I clicked 'run' -
the screen shows 'Preparing - eg 96%' - does that mean I am, at last, installing from the DVD and not the HDD?

    Thank you.

I must be missing something - If I proceed I'll be back to installing from the HDD.

Are you selecting the Save & Exit option or Exiting without Saving?

Excuse me asking...but why are you here?

I know why I'm here. I'm the one who advised the OP to begin the thread when ready to upgrade her laptop and I'm the one who offered to write a step by step guide for her.

But there seems to be people posting her who have nothing to contribute at all. You've just added yourself to that list. Another post that the OP has to avoid in order to get to a post that gives her the information that she needs in order to progress.
So please, once again, there really is no need for anyone else to post on this thread. you are only ruining it for the OP.
As it is I may just request her to begin another and then you lot can continue to pollute this one.

I read the other thread and you helped the poster, your just reacting to Andys posts.

Thanks Neilmcl Post # 56 - yes, I did Save & Exit. (I looked at your YouTube link to be sure) I expected a screen to 'appear.' When it didn't (still with the DVD in) I had no option but to sign in and after re-inserting the DVD the option came up and I chose 'run.'

I really expected to be asked for my Product Key.

That to me sounds like you haven't created a bootable installation image. Do you have a spare USB with at least 4GB, you could try creating the installation media onto the USB and try booting from that instead.

But it sounds like she's running the install DVD from within Windows rather than booting from it for a clean install.
