Re Post # 51 - Oh no! So sorry, EveryWhere and thank you DoaM - I'll start again. I can't possibly give up now after all the valuable help I've been given.

..... So I begin again and soldier on.


I may 'go quiet' for a short time - it's because I'm getting on with the job and will post again - hopefully get it right this time - thanks so, so much for all the help and encouragement.

If it's supposed to be a 120GB drive then that should give around 111GB actual formatted space ... as you only show 99GB then you seem to have lost 12GB (unless that has been allocated for a recovery partition).

Apologies if I'm asking stupid questions - I've not read the guide linked, - it's just that I can't see where a 99GB usable drive space comes from based on normal HDD sizes.

12 GB sounds like a Windows 8 install on another partition.... The other 40 GB sounds like all the other installs that are still on the SSD.

We are looking for perhaps up to 99 GB free out of 111 GB.

It is 8.05 pm and the clean install is complete. The Toshiba is now checking for updates and, as soon as possible, I'll check 'This PC' to see What Disk C says.

I followed the steps to 32 in the link and deleted all the partitions till there was just Drive 0 - Unallocated 111.8, Free 111.8.

I hope it's all OK this time. Will post back soon.


Update at 8.18 pm - This PC shows two drives:


Local Disk 'C' 94.5 GB free of 111 GB and the other drive is the DVD - I'm taking the DVD out of it now.


Does this sound right this time, please?


If this is all OK I can install the nine Drivers from EveryWhere's list.

Thanks very much. I would have abandoned this long ago without the continued help and perseverance of mostly EveryWhere (and others.)



Update on Wednesday morning - 25 July. All the updates/drivers have been installed and everything is going very well - thankfully.


I appreciate all the help very much and I value this forum enormously thank you.

Good this is resolved, but for future reference, Windows didn't ask for a product key, because the key was almost certainly baked into the hardware (UEFI) by Toshiba at the factory.

Just arrived back from that holiday. Nice to know mission accomplished.

It's a nice machine now isn't it? Most definitely snappier than when newly purchased.
Now you can help your family with PC maintenance.

All your old data, including Bookmarks, Pictures, Documents etc are on your newly created external hard drive. It's just a matter of finding/navigating to it and copying it over to the right place on your newly fitted SSD, if you want to do so.

In addition to this, I noted that you utilise AVG free. Be careful when installing this, as in the first instance it tries to install Google products unless you remove the ticks that allow it to do so and in the second instance, it will install a SafePrice browser extension(adware). You don't want this. So choose Customise during the install so that you can un-tick the option to install the unwanted Adware.

It doesn't hurt to have a choice of Browsers at your disposal. Just don't let any of them set themselves as the default unless that is what you want.

Opera has a built-in Ad blocker that will help you to not accidentally click on the wrong thing. In addition, it's not to have to deal intrusive ads.

Re posts # 59 and # 60: Hope you had a good, well deserved I have to say, holiday EveryWhere.

(# 59) - Mission accomplished and I am very pleased and hugely appreciative of all the help I've received.

The Toshiba is extremely fast - faster than ever before. (Imagine a smiley face!) As for '..... helping my family or others with PC Maintenance' ...... maybe a step too far at present, although I've learned such a lot and I'm now on a mission.

The newly created old data is safe in its caddy and, for now, I'm glad just knowing it is there and safe for when transfer is needed, thank you.

(# 60) - I have not installed AVG as Windows Defender is on the Toshiba. Thanks to you, EveryWhere, I am 'new' to Custom Install and I continue to learn. Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 is functioning so well - the new slimmed down Word/Excel version. I also 'allowed' Powerpoint although I have not used it at all. Until this huge learning curve I have, technically speaking, been a 'victim in waiting' for all these extra 'full' installs. All the YouTube and other links have been great - YouTube is a good friend. MSE Techie stuff forum is just the best.

I'll look into Opera (and always 'Custom Installs') now. As is evident from my posts, until this current learning adventure, I used to always install using the easiest, obviously I now know, not the safest or best, route.

There was a news item on TV very reacently saying that it's good for older people (I guess, at 70, that includes me) to learn new things. The learning continues.

'Thank you' to EveryWhere, and the others who have been so helpful, barely does it justice. I feel as if I've just started - are you all saying 'Oh no' and 'Ouch?'
