Keep going Retired at 55 (and Everywhere) - perhaps this has become a challenge too far for MSE forums (fixing computers by text message is never easy and public forums are always going to attract lots of advice...). I think the OP is trying to clean install 8.1 (his choice I believe) and so booting from DVD is as per instructions already given above, repeated here...poppellerant wrote: »...you need power the machine off, hold down either the F2 (bios setup) or F12 (boot selection) key while you turn on the machine and one second after powering on let go of the key.
and for F2...EveryWhere wrote: »Pressing F2 just after you turn the machine on will get you into the BIOS screen. After that, you can navigate to the Boot tab and move the optical drive temporarily to be the first to Boot.If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0 -
2 really long threads - loads and loads of faffing about for what should be a simple quick job ..
OP for gods sake just bin any thoughts of windows 8 and we can have you up and running with shiny new windows 10 install within an hour
You would have a great stable system and be sat with a nice sense of achievement having done it easily yourself .. Instead, your already low self confidence in this is being shot with all kinds of messing about that is clearly not for you.
I know you stated you wanted windows 8 - but you should have been advised against this IMO0 -
Then do as I suggested earlier and take your advice over to PMs and allow others to offer helpful advice should they choose to do so (Note: Just because said advice might differ to yours does not make it invalid or otherwise wrong)
Suggesting to clone a 750 GB HDD with malware and bloatware to a 120GB SSD is worse than invalid and certainly is wrong.
I don't want nor need to take it to PM. I'm on holiday and not always on-line. So it could be helpful if someone who followed the thread could assist her whilst I'm off-line.
Unfortunately most of the 'advice' given is off-topic, simply nonsense or just a distraction to the OP.
Imagine OP is nervous of doing something wrong already and then someone jumps on and states that she is doing it all wrong....that she should have cloned the drive. Stress. Panic. But in the end, the advice was likely completely erroneous and worried the OP for nothing.
Then someone else states that they would have just used the Recovery Discs. But hey are completely out-dated and install lots of Toshiba bloatware. More bad advice and again distracting to the OP. Because then she has to wonder if I know what I'm doing.
Then there are the "why have you wasted time with this? Windows 10 installation takes ten seconds merchants"
None of this is helpful to the OP achieving her goal, but distractions away from it. Very few people are actually helping her. Have you noticed how many have given her assistance? Perhaps two others at most. The rest are all "I know how to do it better". But they don't.
I offered to help the OP and that is what I am doing. I've given her the advice to not respond to any other poster, so that she does not not stray from her path to success.0 -
Re post #18 Everywhere - thanks for giving this your valuable holiday time. If I am (and I am!) vague at times it is reflecting my low level of technical expertise - I'm eager to keep going and hope so much that this thread is not closed.
I value the interest of all these folks.
I hope this makes sense - should I be installing the nine 'saved' Drivers - then attempt a clean install from the DVD - or is the idea to do a clean install (hopefully from the DVD this time) then install the nine drivers? I do appreciate all the time and effort you are giving to get me to the right place, thanks.
In the previous thread you did say that you preferred Windows 10 - it was my idea to stick with what I was familiar with - Windows 8.1. You then helped me to burn the appropriate DVD to have it ready for use. I had no idea that my laptop could update itself!
You helped me to save to a USB stick the option of installing Windows 10 later if I wished. I'll keep hold of this although I am still eager to 'properly' install Windows 8.1.

Just start another if it does. Hopefully the others will take the hint and stay away from the next.
Doubt it though. Too subtle.0 -
Re Post #40 - Thanks for linking that post of mine, debitcardmayhem. I'm the one who is slow to move with the times!
For now Windows 8.1 is good for me, having the benefit of the SSD helps a lot and, if needed in the future, I have everything saved on a USB stick for Windows 10.
Task in hand - to 'get it right!'

everywhere & retired surely the same person????? i am confused. images of both holding their passport or i am not convinced.
this is a farce. installing a ssd is not 10+ pages especially for someone clever/lucky enough to retire at 55"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0
