Stay safe. Sounds (hopefully) like a different world from where I am which is a lot more urban. Glad you got some rest yesterday

  • Thanks SH.

I was rudely awoken about an hour ago by a flash of light and loud bang. I don’t know if it was lightning or something electrical exploding but it shook the house and took the power with it. I hadn’t even had chance to make my morning coffee! Thankfully it’s just come back (for now) but we’re as prepared as we can be in case it goes again.

Shaking the house sounds scary. The wind woke me a few times last night

  • I woke in the night too, about 3am I thought the roof was being ripped off! I don’t want to speak to soon but I think the worst has passed and we’ve only suffered minor damage. The neighbouring farmer has been to check on us and offered to help with any repairs if we need it. It’s a great community spirit here.

We were worried about both mine & DHs parents as they’re all in high flood risk zones, but the high tide has been and gone without much damage so I think they’ll be fine, thank goodness.

  • Glad all ok after the storm, looking a bit rough tomorrow too. Hope the damage isn't too bad.

Got annoyed with some people commenting that it wasn't that bad and why were the schools shut, I'm just glad we're protected by a hill although the prom was bad. Hindsight is such a wonderful thing!

Hope the rest of the weekend is good, H x
  • Thank you both.

I agree, @hugglemonster. Although it wasn’t as bad as we expected, some people have still suffered some major damage. I’d much rather be over-cautious and know my children are at home & safe. We live on the island now so have to prepare incase the bridge(s) close.

I think the issue with storms is you will only know in hindsight what the risk to you and yours was likely to be. Always best to be safe.

  • Very true SH. It’s getting incredibly windy again here - worse than Friday I think. Fingers crossed we don’t lose power again as we’ve no wood left to burn, although we have a ton of cardboard and a little coal left. I think I’ll start making some cardboards ‘logs’ just incase.

DHs car has some major problems at the moment. We paid £100 for a repair yesterday and it hasn’t fixed the problem. The mechanic’s told us to get rid as he thinks the previous keeper could have masked some serious problems that could cost thousands to fix. I’m sick to death of cars and their problems!

Our seller finally turned up to start clearing her $#!+ from the house yesterday. She’s filled 1 and a half skips (that she’s had to pay for) so far and there still more to go. We’ve been here nearly 3 month now & I’m
fed up of looking at her junk. I’m hoping the wind doesn’t blow it all back out of the skips tonight!
  • So…DH traded in his car today. He phoned in advance and agreed it would cost his car + £650, but when he got there he managed to haggle them down to £500. I’m teaching him well! He’s also had to tax the car (£340) & take out a new insurance policy (£300) but is expecting over £200 tax back from the old car and £280 from the insurance policy he cancelled - it was cheaper to cancel and take out a new policy than change his existing one. We could really do without the spend right now, but it’s cheaper than the repairs that were needed to the other one.
