    Hi all

My housemats cat has been diagonised with a flea allergy they refered to it as SADs or something like that what does this mean?

Most likely Saliva Activated Dermatitis - it's the flea saliva that causes the reaction.

Thanks that's kind of how she explained it too me. She said that one bite will set it off if he is sensitive enough.

I understand I have to buy advocate from the vet but do i have to take the cat in every time I go to get it?

Not every time, no. Now the vet has seen your cat you should be good to buy stuff over the counter for the next 6mths or so :)

  • If your pet is suffering from FAD (flea allergic dermatitis) it is important that you start out with
with a flea shampoo and comb your pet in order to get rid of all the grown fleas because one single bite can cause an allergic reaction.
  • I use frontline on my 3 cats in conjunction with indorex in the house (once a year), I was lax in fleaing the cats before spring as they dont go out that much but when they did in summer noticed a flea on one so started used frontline on them all and indorex again through house.

Front line does seem to work on mine however i suspect that it may change over years of use or maybe it is dependant upon the flea..i dont know?
just wanted to add my tuppence worth really and say i have 3 cats that frontline does still work on:o

  • Relieved to find so many others finding frontline no longer working.. My mum has faithfully treated her 2 cats (got all the diary entries & notes to support this) since she first got them - 2000. The frontline treatment always purchased from vet, so the vet also has records. 2 yrs ago, Frontline suddenly stopped working. Poor mum has been going crazy for 2 yrs, spraying, vacuuming, combing, bathing, front lining.. The cats go out clean & come in infested! The vet absolutely insists that it is the carpets & furnishings & the latest is, "it's hedgehog fleas, you'll never get rid of them!". Hedgehog fleas my a**e.
The vet charges £30 for a box of frontline, the house spray they sell is similarly, hugely expensive and they have been happy to rip off my elderly parents for 2 yrs when it is quite clear, there is an issue with flea resistance. Mums cats have not been bothered with ticks - they do pick up ticks now & then but the ticks quickly die & drop off.

We have 2 x 7 month old kittens, both picked up fleas after going outside for the first time - frontline has worked perfectly on them. We live in a different part of UK to my Mum. We will definitely be alternating flea treatment as suggested on this forum.

As for the "blood sugar" theory on bites - No, I disagree. I am mildly allergic to insect bites & these frontline resistant fleas are something else. I can only describe it as a terrible, rage of itching that lasts for 4 days, red & swollen. Not like any other bites I ever had. My son had some bites, but did not react like me at all, thank God!

    Mortgage-free Glee!
I noticed fleas on my cat a week after treating with Frontline. I mentioned this to my vet and she said that other pet owners have said the same thing.
i have returned the Frontline stock I had to Merial, the company that makes it. Their response was a form to fill in and insistence that the product works. I've filled in the form and await the next response. At the very least I want a refund for the 3 packs of the ineffective stuff.
I've switched to Advantage, and sprayed the entire house with Indorex.
    Let's keep posting.
