-- STOP PRESS --
Aparently MSE held a poll on this and the 'keep the Brexit debate' side clearly won a majority.
However, it was then passed to the unelected house of Lords who said you are all too stupid to understand what your doing and abused their ludicrous power to overturn the vote. The Brexit Debate will now be banned until a vote is taken that gives the 'right' answer.:p0 -
Tbh I am totally offended by all tories and brexiteers but I wouldn't want any of 'em banned..My role on this site is to help them see the light and hopefully convert them to the joys of socialism. Whilst I appreciate my views being validated by those who agree with me, there is no challenge in preaching to the converted.
Those who disagree with me can call me what they like, as they often do, fortunately I am not a snowflake that melts easily.
However I appreciate that some people can get hurt by cruel comments. Those who make blatantly cruel and offensive statements to individual posters should not be tolerated and should quite rightly be banned immediately!
These posters are not welcome by me or anybody else, but they are generally blatant trolls and are easy to spot and deal with.
I am not convinced that closing down threads as a consequence of 'heated argument' or whatever, is the way forward.
Dream on tommixBut I like you really.

Nasty name calling and cruelty aside, if a person cannot cope with a robust discussion on an anonymous forum they shouldn't really be participating in any polarised issue.
I have been confused with some of the people that have been PPRd because, when looking over their posts in DT, I haven't noticed anything really obnoxious or offensive in them.
Some posters must be more 'sensitive' than others, but there is always the option not to participate in something you find offensive to you.
By all means remove the perpetrators, including serial reporters, but I don't want to be treated like a child who can't be trusted not to misbehave in public!!
No offence intended to anyone.
That's the crux of it. If you hand censorship over to, say, the 10 most easily "offended", they end up arguing amongst themselves and the others are excluded. One of the easist ways to detect someone's true motives is to see how ready they are to tell others what they may say, or how they may say it.

Govt suffers another defeat in the lords tonight by a larger majority, now goes back to the commons on Wednesday, if they win that one will they invoke the parliament act and start a constitutional crisis?0

I get where Andrea is coming from. I am looking at the forum at 6am, which granted isn't a high traffic time of day. Even so, you have four forums: Debt Free Wannabe, House Buying, DIY and Motoring that have got relatively high traffic. These are all boards which are core to the sites aims, focused on money saving and the issue core to Martin's heart, people being able to manage their money and debts better.
At any time of day, it is these less troublesome and more core boards that get the internet traffic. The likes of DT and Debate House Prices are very much a side act, not important to MSE or what it does. However they are a fun place to hang out, and by coming here many will visit for The Arms, but see other consumer led threads and answer questions about travel, or best buys at Aldi.
What is happening though is that a disproportionate amount of effort is being put into policing those non core areas. We may like coming here, but it doesn't actually help our hosts any in terms of their main mission of helping the consumer.
With that in mind, why shouldn't we show respect for other posters and adhere to a simple request to debate in a civil and grown up matter? MSE has for many years been a gracious host in allowing us a platform to meet up and discuss the matters of the day. The least we can do is return the favour by metaphorically taking our shoes off at the door and behaving.
It will be a great shame if we can no longer debate Brexit, or other core and contentious issues, but we'll only have ourselves to blame. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? The core basis of the forum as a whole, including DT, is that people are nice to each other. It's the primary rule when using the forums.
Disagree with someone as much as you want to, but if you cannot be nice then don't bother posting. I get where MSE Andrea is coming from.
Reading this thread, I can see the point may have been missed, Andrea is not saying we cannot have a robust discussion, but the moment you make it personal - criticising somebody's opinion by calling them an idiot, being sly or sarcastic, then that is when a line has been crossed.
I come here to have discussions, to explore other peoples opinions, I'm not here to change anyone's view, but simply to explore where they're coming from and to express my own view too, but once I get posters telling me "they've won" or "you're racist if you voted Brexit" (genuine examples) then I'm out of that discussion, not interested.
Where I've caused offence in a post by accident then I'm straight in with an apology, there's something wrong in the world when we cannot say sorry for when marks have been overstepped.Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.0 -
Just ban those who spend their days reporting posts they disagree with.Been away for a while.0

Could it be that posters are reporting because the other poster is being rude, discourteous, a bully?
Remember, we're already onto our 2nd Brexit thread, the other one was pulled because people couldn't manage to be nice to each other last time.
There are some posters who post much in terms of propaganda but little in way of discussion, but I cannot recall them ever being rude to people, but I do see posters being rude to them. I'm not a fan of that posters fake news, but either ignore them or discuss and challenge their facts and figures, which can be done without calling them a Socialist/left wing stooge or whatever.

Freedom of speech is becoming hard enough in this country. I have yet to suffer an injury from someone calling me anything they like, in however colourful language.
It's a money saving website, not a free speech forum. The discussion boards are a courtesy and not something the forum team wish to spend a lot of time and resources on.
I agree it might be better to just get rid of them altogether. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
