I think there should be a poll on whether to ban Brexit debate or not.

That would solve everything once and for all with no further unpleasantness.

Would it not be possible to include an 'ignore' button at the bottom of the posts (I believe some sites have that)? That way, if anyone doesn't like a poster's comments, they could easily click on to 'ignore' and not see their posts.

Although it's not quite as simple as a button, there is the Ignore List to which you can add them - it's in your User CP if you weren't aware of it.

The only drawback is that it cannot automatically translate identities when someone creates an AE :(

Pleasant debate is fine. Rudeness is not.

    Spot on.

I suspect that part of the problem is that the written medium is very poor when it comes to interpreting the sentiments behind a comment - someone could make a post intending it to be a bit jokey and one person would see it as that whilst another views it as offensive.
Both of the readers could be correct in their interpretation, it all depends upon how one reads some text and, I dare say, the mood in which one is at the time.

But there would have to be lots more until we all vote the right way.:rotfl:
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

I don't know if it's the same for all platforms, but certainly from a PC it's even easier.

Click on a users name when you're viewing a post, click User Lists, then Add to Ignore List.

If I think someone is an idiot for expressing an opinion, I will say so. Everyone has an opinion on at least some thing or other. If I think that some opinion or approach is unsubstantiated or wrong, if I can be bothered, I'll say so, and yes, if I think I am justified in doing so, I will ask pointed questions and perhaps even take the p!ss.

If someone says something racist or sexist, I too will call them out on it, if I want. Have I been sexist or racist? I don't consider myself to be sexist or racist, and if you can, point out to me where you think I have been. The trouble is, what is sexist or racist is a matter of opinion.

Even then, so what if I, or you, or anyone else calls someone a "name"?

For what it's worth, to me, freedom of speech IS more important than the risk of causing "offence". The more you give other people the right to tell you what you can or can't say, the more you give your freedom away. You can willingly give that freedom away if you like. Don't expect me to do it as well.

There's enough fascism around already. We don't need to encourage more thought police into being, and if that statement offends those who want more thought police, tough!

I don't think that good manners goes in any way against freedom of speech. (And I say that as someone who had also been told off for calling someone an idiot on MSE.:o)

    Hi folks

We're considering placing a ban on all discussion about Brexit.

It would be a shame to do this. We feel many of you are able to discuss the topic in a friendly manner.

However, my team is receiving too many reports about posts that are

    a) rude about another forum member
    b) argumentative
    c) disagreement
    d) opinionated
    e) don't break our rules.

Please help my team out by being considerate of other forum members and not reporting posts simply because you disagree with what's being said.

    Thank you

Naturally, given the views I express and the steps that can be taken against forum members, without appeal (? :naughty: ) I thought quite hard before replying again, but what the "heck"... life's risky!

Just to be clear, and to know exactly what kind of censorship you are planning to excercise, are you saying that this forum is not the place for either argument or disagreement? Points b) and c) above seem to say so.

Or is your original post simply poorly worded, and you are actually complaining to us about the quantity of complaints you are receiving in relation to a) to e)?

Given that the words at point e) in your post don't actually follow on from the introductory part in a grammatical manner, are you saying that you are receiving too many complaints about posts that "don't break our rules "?

Just trying to be helpful to fellow forum members, you understand  ... after all, it's surely only being polite for those in authority over others to make their intentions clear, or is politeness only for the likes of us mere mortals :) ?

Yes, it doesn't seem quite as straightforward as a 'button'.

Wot's a 'CP' and an 'AE', Precious? The only thing that springs to my mind when it comes to 'AE' is 'Accident and Emergency', as in the hospital one.
