There are very few rude posters. Most people on DT are here because they enjoy argument - not quarrel, note - and discussion.

Without disagreement, there is no discussion.

Yes, it doesn't seem quite as straightforward as a 'button'.

Wot's a 'CP' and an 'AE', Precious? The only thing that springs to my mind when it comes to 'AE' is 'Accident and Emergency', as in the hospital one.

User CP is the link near the top of the page for accessing your profile and settings.
AE is Alter Ego, alternative name - often generated by people who've been banned from posting under their original or previous username(s).
  • I used to work in the public sector in an area where people could be said to be vulnerable, coping with difficult situations. I always said to my staff that they could think what they liked but they should think about what they are saying as they had no idea of the mental state of that person. Is it worth calling people names if there is a chance the person is having a difficult time and you are adding to it, how would you feel if you found out it was the straw and someone committed suicide because of the name calling. Now you might say they are snow flakes but we all have times when life seems to be against us and we don't need random strangers insulting us.

I have no problem with people having a different view to me, I do not think it is OK to call me names and it doesn't strike me as a particularly effective form of debate.

Which is fair enough if you're dealing face to face with people that you have some idea about.
However, this is, after all's said and done a public forum, at least in as far as anyone can join.
People who don't want to join in are not forced to.

Name calling apart, which I'd agree is a is a failure to argue the point effectively, some people obviously can't handle the slightest disagreement with what they believe.

Perhaps they're the ones who should be removed for their own good?

I haven't suggested people can't disagree I've just said no need for name calling. Disagreement is obviously part of discussion, being rude is simply unnecessary.

I agree. No need for name calling. As I said, "name calling is a failure to argue the point"
It's fairly obvious if people are just being obnoxious for the sake of it.
I still think that some people take any disagreement at all as a personal affront though.
And that in a lot of cases that over reaction is a problem.

    Why ban discussion on Brexit?

I am unashamedly anti-Brexit...I also happen to be a Christian....and I am disabled, and claim benefits....I have fairly strong views on education ...and on the NHS......anyone of which is a topic that can get discussion going here on the DISCUSSION forum!

I have entered a few discussions...sometimes people agree with me ...sometimes they don't...this is part and parcel of a discussion.

Rudeness, name-calling, pettiness goes on all sorts of discussions here...why only ban discussions on Brexit...I would suggest that the nastiness is exponentially worse when the debate is on Benefits....and on religious topics, anti-Muslim comments get dealt with swifter than anti-Christian ones...why are Brexit threads being singled out?

Of course...banning ALL threads where there is name calling and rudeness would see the end of Discussion Time.....much more sensible would be to deal with rude /offensive posters....and stop them coming back under different usernames......and leave the rest of us to get in arguing and disagreeing and DISCUSSING like the (more-or-less) reasonable human beings that we are.

I agree, both things are obviously causing problems and it sounds like the mods are dealing with both.

How about just banning those who consistently report posts as they feel it gives them an "upper hand"?

Don't really see the need to stop everyone else from having a discussion just so that the constantly offended, don't get offended. But maybe it's just me.

Nasty name calling and cruelty aside, if a person cannot cope with a robust discussion on an anonymous forum they shouldn't really be participating in any polarised issue.

I have been confused with some of the people that have been PPRd because, when looking over their posts in DT, I haven't noticed anything really obnoxious or offensive in them.

Some posters must be more 'sensitive' than others, but there is always the option not to participate in something you find offensive to you.
By all means remove the perpetrators, including serial reporters, but I don't want to be treated like a child who can't be trusted not to misbehave in public!!

    No offence intended to anyone.
