I'm a bit fed up of these sort of summaries (not getting at you Martin - others do it too) only covering the "70% can get it" offerings. It'd be nice if, occasionally, a survey was available of the offerings that are, basically, just a reselling of what BT wholesale provide; 30% is still a lot of people!

And: I think marketing of broadband is decidedly misleading over the matter of line rental - in that they don't mention it at all, until page 2 in tiny print or similar. Claims like "broadband and 'phone calls for £xx" are very dishonest, IMO: IMO, they should be obliged to show the line rental cost, in the same size and font, near to the claimed price. What do you think, Martin and others?
  • Looking for a one-month rolling contract with unlimited broadband - at the minute I am with Plusnet but 4OD and Iplayer usage has taken my bill from £24.99 to £100 (!!!) a month 3 months running.

Ideally I'd like the cheapest service possible with easy transfer with regards to router, phone line, start-up costs etc.

    Any ideas guys?

Just seen that Plusnet have cut the price of their cheapest broadband package to £3.24/month. Anyone know if I can get this as an existing customer?

Their online support team confirm that it's only for new customers. These companies don't give you any reason at all to stay loyal do they?
  • A thread like this really should be restarted every few months.. whats the point of information from 2007?
  • I'm looking for the best internet package, really not interested in having a landline as I use my mobile for all my calls but I know you have to have one, so what are the best deals out there at the moment? I've just moved house so it will be a fresh installation! Thanks :)

I am also this situation. I am quite a high internet user.

Having had no satisfaction from Virgin, I have contacted various ISP's offering very good prices for broadband and anytime telephone calls online.

However, as soon as I give them my post code and phone number, the prices quoted online are not available to me as BT charge the ISP's at least £10 extra for using my rural BT exchange which provides the ADSL line to my house. :(

The other ISP's are charging the same price as Virgin Media so it is not worth my while changing e mail address, router, etc.

This could be me writing this i am in exactly the same situation, always had a good deal from virgin, £7.50 broadband and calls, line rental with bt, until recently now it has gone up to £22, i phoned up expecting them to come up with another offer like they have in the past, but basically it was heres your mac code bye bye. I received it same day in an email. they said it cost them £10 for giving me broadband. Anyway the good news is that talk talk are doing an offer and will do up to 80mb download including line rental for £22. it is not their advertised essentals package, which i cant get due to postcode, but i didnt think it was that bad a deal. just got to make my mind up now as i am not sure wether to go with bt instead and to get the free wifi which they do. i am just waiting for them to call and hope they have a good deal for unlimited. :j
  • Just signed up for Plusnet cheap broadband and phone bundle. Been with VirginMedia for years - they were charging me £51.74 a month and about to put it up another couple of quid. Tomorrow I'll ring and tell them the good news!

    Have to change phone number.
Paid £71.21 up front, for installing a line (from cable) but also including a wireless router.
After that the monthly bills should be £16.23 (discounted for 12 months, then up to £19.48).

Expect to find service much worse, but let's see. Can always switch back in a year as a shiny New Customer.

Check out the search from the link on the first page of this thread for up to date deals. Just put in your post code and a list of available offers appears. (I'd post a link but as a new member I'm not allowed)

If you can get Virgin fibre optic then I would get this. Their speed and consistency is the best, plus all their speeds are being doubled soon. (My 50MB line is going to go to 100MB then to 120MB some time this year)

I know their customer service can be a nightmare, but whose isn't?

I think speed depends heavily on local conditions and (possibly) essential software like firewall and virus protection. I'm with Virgin and measured speed several times last night and this morning using different online speed test sites. They all came in between 6-7 Mb. Plusnet estimate 8Mb for my address.

Sorry, yes through phone lines it does.

I meant if you are in a fibre optic area for Virgin. Virgin's fibre optic speeds are much more accurate than the std copper wire phone line speeds which are heavily dependant on distance from the Exchange.
