The EU and Ireland are not being obstructive - they are being consistent. They have said the same thing for 3 years, Westminster changes it's mind daily.0

I guess it's a case of immovable object meets immovable object then but not helpful in solving the problem. Am currently hiding in the study to avoid yet another episode of Top Gear!0

Feeling strong? Latest gov update
Seems that come the 1st of November, in the event of a no deal Brexit, there will be temporary rates set which will:
• apply from 11pm on the day we leave the EU
• be in place for up to 12 months from that date
(My first thought was so we'd better get the stuff in before 11 am then.)
"For UK imports from the EU, currently 100% of UK imports from the EU enter tariff free. Under the temporary tariff 83% of EU exports to the UK by value will continue to be eligible for tariff free access to the UK market. The majority of UK businesses importing from the EU will face no new customs charges under this regime." Again, I grinned nastily But There will undoubtedly be Extra Paperwork - for which there are grants to train up folks but the costs will still likely be met by us the happy consumers...
And there will be a bunch of people who have to figure out How To Use The Tariff to look up commodity codes. (Think 80s London Phone directory running a particularly idiosyncratic logic? It is all do-able but miword you need to have a strong brew beside you the first time. Or have help.) Then deal with preferential & most-favoured-nation tariff rates. (Perhaps Several brews.)
This is a time where almost any Faith may be a comfort.
As for N Ireland, if you do not have your Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI) number (or an agent therewith) you may as well stay home. So far no hard border, but that’s so far. The Good Friday Agreement is on very uncertain ground.0 -
The whole thing is completely out of our hands and our control my dear, worrying is pointless and we shall all be facing the same set of problems whatever happens. Better than faith will be a set of good friends and neighbours to pitch in for each other come what may in the immediate future. No one knows what the effects of leaving will be and we at least have been prepping for the past three years for the changes we have been able to imagine happening and shoring up our lives to make the best conditions to get through adverse conditions. The time to worry is long gone and the time to be strong come what may is almost upon us.0

And in case we wanted additional examples, could I point to Nancy Pelosi & Lady Hale also strong & admirable women who are Getting On with things.

When I look at the human species, I've come to the conclusion that animals are much nicer to deal with.
Is there any doubt that humans will eventually bring about their own destruction? It seems to be a race between destroying our physical environment or our community environment. I'm not sure which group will succeed first.
Now we're getting into my territory
I'm not going to go OT other than I think yes we will destroy ourselves but not the planet - Earth is also playing the long game to get rid of us (probably). It's just a matter of how many other species become collateral damage
Back to prepping for brexit: Glad to report that my doctor did finally give me 60 day repeats due to my mobility etc, she even threw in a bunch of steroids that I didn't ask for :T
Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?0 -
If we aren't in tune with the ecosystems and other inhabitants of this planet we certainly will bring about the end of the human race. My only hope is that humanity sees this before it's much too late to reverse the damage done. There are altogether too many humans taking without putting back, destroying without repairing and all the things here are finite and will eventually cease to be, that would be a sad day indeed. The only hope is if we all stop consuming thoughtlessly and learn to conserve and manage with big lifestyle changes and learn to be selfless.....it's an awfully big ask isn't it?0

DryTheRain wrote: »Meanwhile a practical question - is castille bar soap any good for handwashing delicates, and if so, how much should you use? The internets has lots of recipes for making up larger batches, but I only want to do a couple of items (pointelle thermals) and would rather make use of something I already have rather than buying another plastic bottle of handwash liquid. Would really appreciate any ideas
I would say “yes, use your bar soap”. You can use it either by wetting the bar and your thermals with warm water and gently rubbing the bar over the garments, or by grating a small quantity off the bar with a grater (a non-food-use grater would be best), or shaving shavings off with a knife (think Parmesan shavings), then dissolve the gratings/shavings in warm water and wash your garments as usual. I dare say that it will be what it will be, neither as bad as is feared nor as good as is expected. It is to be hoped that the government will not compound our folly by intemperate words which will poison future essential relationships.
Meanwhile Events in the wider world are continuing whether we are ready or not, and may involve our taking a different view on things to those we are looking to as a better bet than the current “friends and partners”.
As far as prepping goes, I am starting a final sweep of the local supermarkets for last top-ups but have very little space for any more goods, and lack the energy to make major reorganisations. Since I hate shopping anyway, at least I shall be able to last the winter with little need to shop, even if my menus become increasingly bizarre!
Anyway, ‘nuff said.“Tomorrow is another day for decluttering.”Decluttering 2023 🏅🏅🏅🏅⭐️⭐️

Damp microfibre cloth rather than a flannel in a ziplock bag. Doesn't go manky all that quickly, certainly good enough for a day out
