That's a good one. This could be a good game for New Year.0 -

I have noticed a lot of articles in the online press over the holidays about prepping specifically for the B word but some of them were a little extreme with one lady stocking for six months' worth of food for her family. That sort of scale would be quite hard for families in limited spaces.
I am consciously filling freezers with my own produce and really good YS buys, dehydrating plenty of fruit and veg and also fermenting some items. I am also saving quite a lot of my meagre income and delaying large expenditure, although that might be unwise if there's to be a run on the pound. I'd maybe be better spending it now in the case of anything that's imported.
Wouldn't it be great to have the benefit of hindsight?
So true, with hindsight we'd all be millionaires.0 -
Any advice regarding water? I don't have much room and live in an area where the water gets regularly cut off. I have been looking at the caravan type storage containers but does the water take on the taste of the plastic? Also they are very expensive, cost wise would it be better to buy the cheap bottles from lidl? I do hate this option for all the plastic though.SPC #062

There was a concern raised about water supplies but now they know exactly which chemicals are needed to maintain supplies. Some can be stockpiled and others are made here and production could be ramped up. The ones that are volatile and need to be imported on a JIT basis mainly come in through Immingham which is not thought likely to be seriously disrupted even with no deal.
Identifying a risk and raising a concern need not be a prophecy of certain doom. Having said that, it is always useful to have enough stored water on hand to cope with a very short term disruption - it only takes a burst water main in the wrong place and your water may need to be cut off for a day
I have some of the 10 litre containers from when we had some work done on the main in the road and we knew the water would be shut off. The water tastes fine but I wouldn't get anything bigger than 10 litres, they are very heavyIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
[QUOTE=MrsLurcherwalker;75255247 I've read nothing and heard no argument that will change my views and will continue prepping not particularly for Brexit but because I think being prepared for the unexpected is common sense and it's easy enough to do on a rolling basis.

The thing is that I don't know which way most posters voted although I suppose if I trawled through their posts I could hazard a guess (unlikely as there are books to be read). However, I don't particularly care about that when I am reading this thread because I just want to know that I have made my own preps. to the best of my ability and although I have been doing this a long time sometimes I read something that makes me re-think things. So thank you to all those who did post ideas and suggestions in good faith.
Talk about democracy always reminds me of my old manager who used to tell us that our office was run as a democracy until he decided otherwise:)0 -
If anyone suggests that they think Brexit is going to be a mess, or is frustrated by the fact that it's acceptable to have unknowns in the food or medical supply chain, they're accused of politicising or lacking the right attitude. This whole thread is so frustrating. It also seems like the cheerful to leave are the most sensitive in terms of taking it *very* personally when concerns are raised.
It's hard to discuss the preparations to make without discussing the potential problematic outcomes of Brexit, and all of those things just are political. This isn't a cosy catastrophe novel, these are real lives that some of us are very worried about. How can we talk about lack of life saving medicines without feeling?
Reading back, there's more outrage at the suggestion that Brexit is stupid and going to suck, than there is at someone suggesting withdrawing life boat charitable contributions because they're daring to rescue some swarthy folk from dinghies. There's one paragraph posts that use the word 'I' well over ten times. There's tellings off for being bitter and political, before launching into own brand bitter and political.
I voted remain. That's obvious though. I vote labour knowing they'll go ahead. Couldn't give two toots really about Europe as a capitalistic trading block. It's the entitled xenophobic selfish attitudes that have been bought mainstream and frameworked the whole vote that disturb me. It's the winning vs losing over right vs wrong. It's the lack of thoughtfulness and empathy and increased division.0 -
MrsLurcherwalker wrote: »Could I just register that I am about as far from panic as it's possible to get? what I am doing is putting in futures to ensure that during the first few months after the dreaded Brexit happens we can have life as much as normal as it's possible to do. Our everyday life is pretty simple anyway and we're not into takeaways or lots of goings out so as long as we can stay warm, have many cups of tea and eat simple home cooked meals (we actually LIKE beans on toast!) we'll be content. I shall raid the charity shops here for some new books to read, we'll carry on planting up the allotment as normal and keep a low profile as we always do. I see nothing to panic about if you can get organised before it happens and be contented with less than you expect to have in the normal run of things.
That is great and I'm sure it is what we would all hope to do but could you just tell those of us who are worried about supplies of life saving medications how we fit in?0 -
MrsL doesn't have to tell you about your life surely humptydumptybits. MrsL has her own things down for what she needs. Medications are a worry though I agree. I have two heart meds and two asthma meds. One of my heart meds is manufactured in France. As a prepper my mentality has been to find a way that I can try to buffer supply as soon as I start a med.
I worked out that if I order my medications online via the surgery website the system allows me to pre order that med 7 days earlier than the official renewal date. I have, for my circumstances, for me, accrued 2 months worth of medications. This won't be acceptable to everyone I fully understand that but the prepping mentality has preppers thinking out side of the box, striving for self reliance and trying to stand on our own two feet in a crisis. I would have sought a way to get a buffer without Brexit looming. It's just in me.
We all have to do what we feel we have to do and just because MrsL has been prepping for years doesn't make her have all the answers. She has her own answers to her own problems, plodding along with her head down, as am I.
Many people seem to forget that preppers generally are preppers because they've experienced really quite frightening times in their lives and they feel emotionally better with a buffer. What ever our views are, worries, annoyances and frustrations they are valid for us but they aren't necessarily valid for the next person.
No one can tell anyone how to prep. It's some thing you have to figure out for yourself and your own needs.0 -
I do things I feel are sensible, I stock up to our preferences and what I can afford. The way I voted is between me and God and I don't do politics. I don't actually mind which party is in power they all end up with the same problems to solve at the end of the day and some are better at it than others and do a better job. I wouldn't have minded if that wretched referendum had led to a remain majority, I don't object to the fact that it led to a leave majority. All I want is as good a life for me and mine as it's possible to lead under whatever circumstances I find we have to deal with, it doesn't seem a crime to want that. I feel very sad that this thread was set up for practical and useful ideas to be shared on how to get ready for the unknown that is Brexit, most of us have tried to post what we see as useful and sensible ideas to help all of us many have just posted derision, venom and hate so I don't read their posts. If I find posts that aren't about sensible prepping ideas then the poster goes on my extensive ignore list, I'm up to nearly 100 now and it certainly makes life less stressful not reading their posts to me or to anyone else unlucky enough to be in the firing line!0

My surgery won't let you order early unless it is for something like a holiday and the following prescription will go back to normal date. I've been told they aren't supposed to be letting people order extra/early as it will add to shortages and of course if you abide by the rules, or your surgery does, you lose out.
My question was general, MrsLs post was an example of how people can overlook the very serious issues some people face. I obviously don't expect MrsL to be able to magic up med for me but I have been told on this site that there isn't a problem, that people are making it up but that is easy to say if you have a stash of meds or don't need meds.
To be honest I would think alot of a leaver who said they never intended to put other people's lives at risk and are sorry many people have this worry but we are repeatedly told it is fake news, operation fear or whatever. Just an acknowledgement that this is a real issue for many people would be very much appreciated.
Just to add my prescriptions are for 6 months, although dispensed monthly by pharmacy, so once the potential problems with medication were made known I really couldn't have built up much anyway. I have no idea how I can work out what to do about it hence I am asking the question.0
