I thought this was a thread on prepping ?
Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, but this time more intelligently
  • I do things I feel are sensible, I stock up to our preferences and what I can afford. The way I voted is between me and God and I don't do politics. I don't actually mind which party is in power they all end up with the same problems to solve at the end of the day and some are better at it than others and do a better job. I wouldn't have minded if that wretched referendum had led to a remain majority, I don't object to the fact that it led to a leave majority. All I want is as good a life for me and mine as it's possible to lead under whatever circumstances I find we have to deal with, it doesn't seem a crime to want that. I feel very sad that this thread was set up for practical and useful ideas to be shared on how to get ready for the unknown that is Brexit, most of us have tried to post what we see as useful and sensible ideas to help all of us many have just posted derision, venom and hate so I don't read their posts. If I find posts that aren't about sensible prepping ideas then the poster goes on my extensive ignore list, I'm up to nearly 100 now and it certainly makes life less stressful not reading their posts to me or to anyone else unlucky enough to be in the firing line!

I absolutely agree with making sensible decisions, I am restocking my cupboard which has taken a bit of a hit over Christmas and as I haven't been able to get out for a few days as I'm feeling unwell. We have a generator, we have wind up torches, I have rice, pasta, tins etc. My problem is my med which I can't stock up on. I am making enquiries about getting a private prescription but it looks like I would need to go through all the tests first. My final plan is I have exercised my rights to a passport from an EU country and will go abroad if necessary but my DD has the same condition and she needs to work so that is another issue.
  • I thought this was a thread on prepping ?

Isn't trying to work out what to do about lifesaving medication prepping? Not much use doing all the prepping in the world with other things if I die because I can't get my med, the Health Secretary has admitted that there might be deaths because of issues with medication.
  • I've bought in a couple of packs of vegetable suet today to go in my stock cupboard to make dumplings to go in pulse based vegetable soups. I shall make big pots of soup and start our meals with soup and a dumpling 'old fashioned style' like HWK's parents used to do which meant less of the expensive usually meat based second course was needed. I shall also adopt the old fashioned idea of making a big steamed pudding with some dried fruit in it to serve after a small meat based main course with lashings of custard made from custard powder and skimmed milk for the same reason. Good old fashioned rib stickers will fill up holes in tummies and give energy to let folks work hard.

If anyone suggests that they think Brexit is going to be a mess, or is frustrated by the fact that it's acceptable to have unknowns in the food or medical supply chain, they're accused of politicising or lacking the right attitude. This whole thread is so frustrating. It also seems like the cheerful to leave are the most sensitive in terms of taking it *very* personally when concerns are raised.

It's hard to discuss the preparations to make without discussing the potential problematic outcomes of Brexit, and all of those things just are political. This isn't a cosy catastrophe novel, these are real lives that some of us are very worried about. How can we talk about lack of life saving medicines without feeling?

Reading back, there's more outrage at the suggestion that Brexit is stupid and going to suck, than there is at someone suggesting withdrawing life boat charitable contributions because they're daring to rescue some swarthy folk from dinghies. There's one paragraph posts that use the word 'I' well over ten times. There's tellings off for being bitter and political, before launching into own brand bitter and political.

I voted remain. That's obvious though. I vote labour knowing they'll go ahead. Couldn't give two toots really about Europe as a capitalistic trading block. It's the entitled xenophobic selfish attitudes that have been bought mainstream and frameworked the whole vote that disturb me. It's the winning vs losing over right vs wrong. It's the lack of thoughtfulness and empathy and increased division.

What frustrates me is that terms like xenophobia and lack of thoughtfulness get used as if the referendum was decided on a single issue. I actually gave a lot of thought to how I would vote and could see plus and minus points for both sides of the argument. In the end I voted (leave, for the avoidance of doubt) for what I though would be better for the country. I do not have an issue with foreigners/immigration/maintaining good relations with other countries - in fact I think we could do a great deal more on all fronts - so yes it annoys me to be considered xenophobic or racist. However I do give "two toots about Europe as a capatalistic trading block" when, in my opinion, this country has been reduced to a minor participant in decision-making (although a fairly major player in funding). I think the fact that people are so concerned about supplies of medication etc. is a good example of how much control Britain has lost over its own destiny, and the EU's attitude of "here is the deal - take it or leave it( attitude has only reinforced that view. I too take daily medication - the lack of which won't immediately kill me but would make life fairly difficult, so I have done what I can to try to get a small stock of that. Not easy, as rightly the NHS have tightened up on repeat prescription ordering, but should I have voted remain on that basis alone? Would I change my mind in the event of a 2nd referendum? The answer is no. Would I be really angry if a 2nd vote changed the decision, and find it difficult to forgive those who voted remain? Again the answer is no for the simple fact that there is only so much I can do to change things I disagree with (and I do actually campaign for certain things that mean a lot to me).Life will go on regardless of what happens - it will be better for some, no doubt, and worse for others - but it will be much better for all if we try to put the differences behind us and focus on helping each other.

My question was general, MrsLs post was an example of how people can overlook the very serious issues some people face. I obviously don't expect MrsL to be able to magic up med for me but I have been told on this site that there isn't a problem, that people are making it up but that is easy to say if you have a stash of meds or don't need meds.

To be honest I would think alot of a leaver who said they never intended to put other people's lives at risk and are sorry many people have this worry but we are repeatedly told it is fake news, operation fear or whatever. Just an acknowledgement that this is a real issue for many people would be very much appreciated.

Just to add my prescriptions are for 6 months, although dispensed monthly by pharmacy, so once the potential problems with medication were made known I really couldn't have built up much anyway. I have no idea how I can work out what to do about it hence I am asking the question.

I am a leave-voter, and I am sorry that people are so worried about medication supplies. In my previous post (above) I have said that I too take daily medication and have managed to get a week or two ahead by finagling the prescription ordering but I have to say I have not seen a post on this thread that says these concerns aren't real, or are "made up". It also reinforces my desire to leave the EU as I don't believe this country should be so reliant on others for what most would consider a basic human need. However, I also think that rather than direct anger at people who hold opposing views, it should be directed at the people who can do something about it - the Government. Have you asked you doctor/pharmacist/health authority for advice?

I'm using my energy and time to get prepared in my own way for whatever life throws in our path be it Brexit or climate change or anything else. Time wasted on shouting at people like me and heated posts over things political that the ordinary woman in the street have no control over is precious time wasted so there's no time to try to counter those posts. Precious time is saved by not doing so that is being used by me and people like me to get as ready for potential changes to life in the UK as we can. Time is fast running out to actually prepare and before we know it it will be April 1st and we'll be at the tipping point, better to use what time we have left to make plans and get things in place rather than continually repining the position. I don't overlook the obvious I get organised and have been since the day of the referendum vote and made my plans then, it's been almost two years and if plans haven't been made and strategies to cope made it's not my fault, we all have had the same opportunities to get prepared, I've used mine to good purpose, I can't vouch for anyone else so if you're in a twist, it certainly isn't anything to do with me and there's nothing I can do about it!

I've said it before and I'll repeat 'I won't be drawn into an argument or a discussion either so it's no use baiting me, I WON'T PLAY!'.

Humpty people with chronic illness voted to leave as well. Why is it important to you to get an apology or some sort of recognition that you might be put out. The reasons people voted to leave are just as valid as your reasons to stay.

It's clear that for the want of trying this thread just goes round and round in circles. On one hand I give a strategy on how I'm approaching things, talk about prepping as a lifestyle choice and that is met with wanting apologies for the referendum result worrying people.

Prepping calms worry. That's a big reason why we do it. Societial apologies aren't going to help you. Stop blaming others with a different opinion to yours for your own predicament or your own lack of foresight. Many, many people have a medication buffer. Ask yourself how and why? Most probably they were on to it before the mention of stock piling, Brexit and problems getting meds onto our soil.

    Hats off to the prepper.

I really am out of contributing to this thread. It's turned into a farce.
  • The referendum occurred in the first place to negate the rising ukip influence on potential Tory voters. UKIP have demonstrated themselves to be thoughtless and xenophobic, and it is their influence that has frameworked this vote.

In no way do I believe all leave voters are these things. If the referendum had happened under different circumstances with a viable, sustainable and future facing idea in place about how we would be different outside of EU influence, had the emphasis been on forging a better less financially focussed future, I'd have voted leave myself. I'm not pro the corporate structure.

But here we are, two months from the event and all that seems to have changed is entrenching of win/lose mentality. It's not been prepared for properly, if there is any question of medicine shortages we (as a country) are not ready for this. If we rely on others so much, this speedy withdrawal is not sensible.

Would agree that helping each other is the best thing to do to get through this, but might add that it doesn't exclude accepting that other people will have different concerns.

Dreaming - I am of the opinion that this is one of the main reasons that many people voted to leave the EU and its why so many obstacles are being put in the way to deter other countries from doing the same.
Just to add my two pennorth - many medications are produced by more than one manufacturer expecially if they are no longer under licence. You may well find if your brand is restricted there will possibly be another equivalent. (and yes I do need meds to keep me alive!)
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle
