Prepping for Brexit thread

Despite being an atheist I have just caught Archbishop Welby's New Year address on the news and would love it if more pople could use it as a basis on which to build 2019 - whether we are in or out of the EU, or with or without a deal. I respect everyone's opinions on this obviously emotive subject, and full uphold the right of those campaigning on both side, as long as it is done with respect, but Welby spoke a great deal of sense in that people "disagree on many things, and we are struggling with how to disagree well".
Please people, do whatever you feel is the right thing for you and those close to you - whether that is prepping to the max., or just buying an extra couple of tins of tomatoes, or ignoring it altogether. Whatever happens, we will all have to live with each other when the dust has settled.0 -
Yes Mardatha
I’m fighting a losing battle here so I’m going to give in. The plan was to be positive and helpful so that people are ready for whatever happens, but people can’t seem to get past the leave or remain arguments.

So sorry cuddly.....you meant well, such a shame to see such a well intentioned thread hijacked.
Thanks for trying.0 -

Totally agree with this.
I really want to understand why people think the way they do, and talk without everyone getting stressed or defensive.
We're all here because we want the same thing - to prepare for Brexit. I'd have thought this would involve mutual understanding, but I'm getting the impression that anything other than cosy chat where everybody agrees is strictly taboo.Early retired - 18th December 2014

I think the OP did mean this to be a thread of "cosy chat" and swapping of ideas about how best we can mitigate any possible disruption to our day to day lives, rather than a discussion thread on the wrongs or rights of the referendum outcome. I read this thread (and other similar ones) to pick up hints about how to live on a limited income. I am more than happy to discuss why I voted the way that I did (and listen to other viewpoints) but prefer to do that face to face. I believe there are other areas of MSE that already have more political discussions underway. Surely we can keep this thread going in a spirit of mutual respect and co-operation? I vote for more cosy chat!:)0 -
dreaming
I think you will find the people who were usually contributing hints or tips in a spirit of helpfulness will not longer post here. I know I won't and probably won't even read the thread as there is no point.
Thanks cuddly for what would have been a good idea."This site is addictive!"

Goldiegirl cosy chat where everyone gets along merrily despite vast differences, posting on threads of interest with like minded people is exactly what this thread was supposed to be about. If you want opinion, debate and divisive talk why can't you do that on Discussion Time please?0

I'd love to know which nitwit coined the term People's Vote, can anyone pinpoint the first iteration in the media for me, please?
Of course, it wasn't People voting in the referendum, it must have been Cats. Or lumps of cheddar cheese. It clearly wasn't the Right Sort of People and needs to be re-run so that these misguided souls can express the error of their ways.
More than half the people who bothered to vote, voted Leave. Not much more than half, admittedly, but we don't re-run parliamentary elections because no party gets an overwhelming majority so I can't see any good reason for re-running the referendum to get a bigger majority or a different outcome by another small majority.
And what will happen if the answer is still Leave but by another 1-2%? Will we have another referendum in hopes of a better result? Will 10% or more between sides be deemed acceptable? Shall we go for best of three? Flip a coin?
The media, many politicians and the chattering classes have had their knickers in a twist ever since the results came in. We are not, imo, getting reasonable coverage of the possible/ probable outcomes of any form of brexit.
A pan-european superstate taking in everything as far as Russia and China was always the goal of the EU project. Other countries want out, too. So, brexit has to be made as difficult as possible for us to stop the other countries trying to leave. That was a given from the beginning.
Whichever way it goes down, a lot of people are going to be royally p'd off, but that's no good reason for squabbling about it on Old Style.I think this is my first post on this thread, I suspect it'll be my last. Peace and love to you all for 2019. GQ xx

"Right sort of people". :rotfl::rotfl:
Great post GQ.
And you are right about the whole Pan European state thing and other countries also wanting out. My Belgian relatives tell me that a lot of Belgians are nervous and unhappy too. Merkels demands for a EU army was the final straw and it has really put the wind up a lot of Belgians. Not surprising when you consider what their lives were like under the Occupation. People don't forget.
It's not just the U.K. and Italy who would like to sever ties......
The media hype is well and truly getting on my wick.
Roll on April and then hopefully we can just get back to the business of living ......0
