One of the delights of living in Norfolk is that we'll soon be eating the freash aspargus ( known locally as sparrowgrass) sold by the roadside next to the field where it was grown (much better than stuff that's been stored weeeks/months and air freighted). I guess having it donated by a neighbour is even better! You must be furhter south, we're still a few weeks away from our crop.
I agree with previous poster. Simplicity is the key. Check the stalks and cut off any "woody" hard bits at the end. Then simply put into a pan of cold water bring to boil and switch off as soon as it is bubbles up. Drain through collander and serve with a nob of butter...delicious. esp with fish. If you want to you could replace butter with hollandaise sauce. I wouldn't try to do anything more fancy with asparagus it's got a lovely clean fresh taste, why spoil that?Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!0 -

I'm on the coast in north Pembrokeshire and the baby potatoes are due any time now as well. My neighbour is a treasure; she gave us what was possibly the world's biggest cauliflower last time!"I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0

It's also nice roasted - toss lightly in oil, add & a bit of S&P then into the oven for 10-15 minutes depending how big it is. Balsamic dressing & a few parmesan shavings finish it off nicely.
Lovely fresh asparagus straight from the garden is probably best just lightly steamed, with maybe a knob of butter. Yum!0 -
jo_b wrote:Asparagus has quite a subtle flavour so can easily be overpowered. I'd just steam it or lightly boil it so it still has some bite.
Personally, I just add a knob of butter and use it as a vegetable accompaniment.
You need to cut off the end bits before you cook it as they can be a bit tough.
Absolutely perfect, cannot offer any better adviceSealed pot challenge 5430 -
Just bend them gently as they have a "breaking" point. Steam lightly and seve with lashings of butter and freshly ground black pepper. Can I come for tea please? :drool:I have the mind of a criminal genius. I keep it in the freezer next to Mother....0

Tips as in ideas. I got a massive bunch of asparagus at the market today and fancy doing something other than soup or griddling it.
Any ideas? What if the hokey cokey is what it's all about? :eek:Official "Bring back Mark and Lard NOW! or else (please)" Member 160 -
