Asparagus - what to make?!

As long as it takes?
Honestly have no idea, but I remember my Mum eating it with a huge pile of butter.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

I steam mine, using a basic bamboo steamer. Take each 'stalk' of asparagus and hold lightly between your fingers at each end, gently bend until it snaps - this ensures that you get rid of the woody part.
Then I poop it all in a steamer for about 5 mins (really depends on size, type and freshness) I just keep taking bites until I find the right consistency!!!
A slodge of real butter on top with some shavings of parmesan is good - alternatively, eat like a normal veg. great in quiches etc.r.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
There is a thread about asparagus with loads of ideas on so I'm going to merge the two together. The posts will print in date order so these posts will print near the end and the older threads will be at the beginningWhen life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt0

I reckon it takes approx 5 mins from a rolling boil.
I have found it very nice with:
- just butter
- parmasen shavings (but that's only a really, really special occasion, given the price of both ingredients!)
- pancetta.0 -
My lovely neighbour has just given us a big bunch of asparagus, but I have to admit that I've never cooked it before......any asparagus experts out there?! At least dinner is sorted tonight!"I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0

Asparagus has quite a subtle flavour so can easily be overpowered. I'd just steam it or lightly boil it so it still has some bite.
Personally, I just add a knob of butter and use it as a vegetable accompaniment.
You need to cut off the end bits before you cook it as they can be a bit tough.0 -
Thanks jo - I was thinking of steaming it; 5 minutes or so??"I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0

I steam it usually and serve it with butter and a squeeze on lemon juice.

You hold each end and gently bend it. It's natural breaking point will determine between the stalky, woody lower end and the edible, tasty head. Generally the 'good' bit is as long as your index finger.
You can just boil it and eat it al dente like jo_b says or you can boil it then fry it off with some real butter and very finely diced garlic. Asparagus is one of my favourite foods0 -

Maybe a little bit less than 5 minutes, depending on how thick the stalks are. All these recipes and suggestions are giving me a craving for asparagus now!0
