I'd ask the people you bought the house from if they had any issues.
I'd also be quite suspicious - unless there's a mental health issue you don't know about it all seems a bit pushy. I'd probably tell the police not that they'll do much but you never know they might have them on their records. Have you tried googling their name and see if anything comes up. I'd also be worrying about what's under the floorboards or in the roofspace. I definitely wouldn't let them in the house.

Did he sell the house voluntarily? He seems quite attached.

Im not very good in situations like this, I am quite blunt I would tell him he needs to stop contacting all of you.

I have no idea, we didn't buy it off he lived there last in 2003!

Sounds like Aspergers/Autistic obsessive behaviour. He probably means well but doesn't recognise he's being overbearing.

I've known guys like that who will literally talk forever about their particular obsession.

Is it an especially old, historically interesting or unique property? If so, it might be useful to have his info; but posted or emailed to you if you're uncomfortable meeting in person. A history of someone's DIY activities is not necessary.

If you don't want contact, then ignore all communication on Facebook and be polite but firm if you bump into him; "thanks but we're not that interested. Hope you're enjoying your new place. Bye."
no not at all unique or historic its a semi detached house at the end of a terraced row of houses

haha we have been curious too but my husband has been up and hasn't found anything

Ah yes, but did he tap on the walls for any hollow areas? ;)

I expect the previous owners also explored the loft, so it probably won't be something obvious that's hidden.

but he keeps coming back, he spoke to my husband, he has never spoken to me, its always been my husband or other family members who have been visiting

That is the point that struck me.

So - he has contacted a woman (ie yourself) on Facebook - but won't apparently speak to a woman in person.

That fact, on its own, would tell me I want nothing to do with him personally. My attitude would be "You either treat both of us equally and speak to the woman in this couple, as well as the man in this couple - or forget it matey".

But, in actual fact, I wouldnt want to know about this behaviour anyway (as it's being so persistent) - and both my husband and I would be saying firmly "WE have responded to your queries - and now we have other things to get on with. WE aren't interested" and have nothing further to do with him.

I doubt many people mind a one-off interest in a house a person used to live in and will take the chance to find its "past history" from the person concerned. But, after that, it does start feeling a bit obsessive.

(Though I admit I'd be having a good look in the loft - just in case there really is something there). Try under the loft insulation or in any gaps in loft walls in between neighbouring houses...
