    It was brilliant
No constant updates of many 100's Mb (the whole OS was about 20Mb) with full user control over what it did !
    How were you on CP/M?

Oh, wow! That takes me back! One of the first OSes I used... not that I remember much.

I spent far too long messing around with DR Logo and turtle graphics... and playing text-only adventure games!

Heck of a lot more reliable than Windows 10! :rotfl:

Ah, those were the days! How time flies... :o

Not as old as CPM, but to the unknowing my machine would appear to be running windows 95 or 98, minus the dog on the search.

I cancelled the updates and manually did them only when they were safe. But my tablet updated and it doesnt want to let me install my own programs. And another update is stuck in a cycle where it fails to install but keeps trying anyway. Even removing the update files and folders wont stop it trying.

MS got jealous of Apple? Trying to inflict a locked down OS to everyone. Windows S was it? Reported some time back, ony allows
    programs from the MS store?

Seems they maybe inflicting that upon us all.

I still have fleeting moments when I wish I were back on CP/M. Once you were familiar with it, it was very quick to do some things that take longer with a GUI.

I also didn't get the feeling that the machine I was using was generously loaned to me out of the goodness of the OS company's heart and that they could seize control of it whenever it suited them.
  • DOS 2 here. Then there was GEM and Windows 286.
I'd swap 'em all for BBC BASIC...

I'm sad about Classic Shell, as much for the loss of free choice as for the actual menu. These days I only keep Windows 10 on one machine for the sake of Photoshop and Quick Sync Video. The rest of my kit operates happily in various alternate universes.

My first experience was with a 386 SX (16 bit) 25Mhz with 2Mb RAM - That was an upgrade from standard 1Mb - with a 40Mb hdd
My employers paid over £4000 for this in 1986 ...
Things have moved on considerably in the last few decades - not necessarily always for the better !

Yes, there's a curious notion going around that change is always for the better. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it isn't. Sometimes it's mixed.
