I've just come across this thread and I love it. I grew up in the complete middle of nowhere but bought a flat in the city a while ago as I fed up of the winter commute. Roads aren't gritted and in the past I had to abandon my car and walk home in snow storms. Now with lock down I can't back and I'm missing the country air, lambing season and my cat. I've subscribed to this thread to continue to cheer me up
I'm a hillbilly at heart.

Welcome Emma, lovely to see you 😊 I'm afraid I won't be cheering you up today though - we've had Mildred put to sleep this morning 😥 all week she's been sat out with me and seemed quite serene snoozing in the sunshine, but today she was so weak she couldn't stand, and could barely lift her head.
Vet was very kind and didn't once laugh at me for being a sniveling wreck. Obviously we couldn't go in with her, but then Mildred did always have a strong sense of personal boundaries and was never one for a cuddle anyway...
All very sad, and I'm not expecting much of myself today. Just sitting out with the others who are all being quite quiet.
As regards kale... I often do what Fortune suggested and make kale crisps. Failing that I fry it up with garlic and mushrooms etc - I prefer it a bit crispy in a stir fry myself.
Back later when I'm feeling a bit more normal x10 -
Sorry to hear about Mildred @Cheery_Daff. We had chickens when I was little, and although not all of them had names (and the boys usually ended up in the oven or freezer as soon as they got loud enough to wake us up at the crack of dawn...), there were a couple who were very definitely pets. We also had two geese, one of whom was hatched by a bantam - he used to cuddle her by laying his neck across her (she used to get fed up and fly away when he tried to get underneath her even when it was about 3 times her size, and he'd cry until we brought here back). We were supposed to be having goose for Christmas dinner, but that didn't quite work out...

Sorry to hear about Mildred. My dad is getting more hens because he says worse case scenario if he can't get to food shops he's going to live off eggs and vegetables from the veggie garden. We've never really named our hens but our cockerals are always called Rufus, I think we now have Rufus mk12. I keep my distance from the hen pen as I've got a phobia of them after being attacked by one as a child. Of all the animals I grew up around - sheep, cows, horses, ducks, goats, cats, dogs it's the chickens I'm scared of. Irrational I know.7

Although I must admit, it’s hard to see a weeny long-tailed tit as being a cousin of Tyrannosaurus Rex! 😂(I just lurve spiders!)
