Sorry to hear about Mildred
But I'm sure she appreciates the extra care you're giving her.
It sounds like you had a productive weekend in the garden! I've only got a little bit of wood preserver left and it's earmarked for the bird table, but DH needs to fix the base first. I think if I had more, I might be tempted to start the mammoth fence-painting task.... pity I haven't got any then!Mortgage free 16/06/2023! £132,500 cleared in 11 years, 3 months and 7 days

Lot of good news there - the LPG, your lovely donation, all the work you did outside ... I'm sorry to hear about Mildred, it *is* upsetting, but you've got the diagnosis from the vet, and you *are* treating her like a sensitive elderly lady. I hope you can enjoy giving her some luxury too.

Thanks folks xxx
She's definitely getting luxury KC. We've discovered more about her specific favourite treats this week than ever before. I suppose I never really thought about them having individual preferences, rather than just 'chickens like...'. They all like corn of course, but also apple, yogurt, raisins etc. Mildred, it turns out, has a particular fondness for mushrooms that the others don't share. At the minute we're trying anything to get her to eat something.
What a shame about your fence Vix!I've still got some wood preserver left, pity I can't just drop it over...

That’s lovely that you’re getting to know her better ☺️Thanks for the offer Cheery, but even under normal circumstances, I think that might be a bit far! 😁 Wilkos are open, but it really isn’t an essential journey. Might depend on the outlook - if they do some temporary lifting of restrictions I might stock up ready...Mortgage free 16/06/2023! £132,500 cleared in 11 years, 3 months and 7 days

Sorry to hear about Mildred Cheery - it does sound as though your helping her to live her best life though. And I think that's the very best we can do for our pets however long or short their lives may be.

Aww, bless little elderly Mildred. Looks like you are really spoiling her Cheery. Who could ask for more?.
It is sad when they become old and frail but you should be so proud of yourself for all you do for your feathered friends. Well done Cheery x

Aw, thank you lovely people. We've never had this before - neither of us have ever had pets as adults (and obviously it's not the same when you're a child). And our other two chickens were killed so while that was very traumatic for all concerned, it wasn't this lingering decline...
Anyway, Mr Cheery has rounded up a few worms for Mildred and hand fed her a little snack before bedtime. She went into the hen house to bed as soon as we put them in the run (4.30) so she'll have a nice long rest overnight. Bless her.9 -
I love reading about your adventures but don't often contribute. I'm one of those lurkers! I used to keep chooks too and the favourite treat of mine was most definitely dried mealworms. I could easily get them into bed if I shook the mealworm pot. They used to run up the run to get to them. I didn't just tease them - I did let them eat them too!10

It's one of the hardest things about having pets - knowing that you might have to make "that decision" at some stage. Growing up we always had dogs, and thankfully for my parents the point where "that decision" about the one we'd had since I was tiny didn't have to be made until I was old enough to be a part of making it. Some years later we had another dog that we lost very young while she was having a routine operation - that was sad as it was just such a shock and we felt that she still had so much life to live - much the same as your girls that were killed Cheery.
There is absolutely no question that your ladies have had a far better life with you than they could ever have imagined in their earlier years.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡
