Cheery's country living adventure

EssexHebridean said:It's one of the hardest things about having pets - knowing that you might have to make "that decision" at some stage. Growing up we always had dogs, and thankfully for my parents the point where "that decision" about the one we'd had since I was tiny didn't have to be made until I was old enough to be a part of making it. Some years later we had another dog that we lost very young while she was having a routine operation - that was sad as it was just such a shock and we felt that she still had so much life to live - much the same as your girls that were killed Cheery.
There is absolutely no question that your ladies have had a far better life with you than they could ever have imagined in their earlier years.
The other was also old (14.5) and had heart problems, and one day just keeled over.
In hindsight, I think I kept both of them longer than I should have. I didn’t think that at the time, but looking back, I think I was deluding myself a bit. ☹️☹️☹️
Something for me to bear in mind and remember, if there is ever a next time.(I just lurve spiders!)

I used to keep chooks too and the favourite treat of mine was most definitely dried mealworms. I could easily get them into bed if I shook the mealworm pot. They used to run up the run to get to them. I didn't just tease them - I did let them eat them too!
Ours are very fond of mealworms too. I confess they've had rather a lot today as we've been trying to distract them while we tempted Mildred with a treat (we finally got her to nibble a bit of sponge cake, of all things!) Bless her. she's sat in the sunshine all day with me today though, still doesn't seem distressed, just very snoozy. Poor little beaky pal.
Not much else to report. Not bought anything, not been anywhere. Mostly been sitting outside on the swing seat reading (for work for the last few days, but I've been off today). I did clean the drain out this evening - euwwww! Bleurgh. Got into a dreadful habit of tipping Mr Cheery's coffee grounds down there (SUCH a waste when they could be on my compost heap) and of course they'd all collected in the outside u bend, possibly for ages as the surrounding area was all soggy.
Still, half an hour with my bare arm up to my elbow in gunk and the whole thing seems to be flowing freely now thank goodness. Still, urgh!!
Before all that I knocked up a few fairy cakes (just 6 - and yes, we have eaten them all already, except for the bit we gave to Mildred). I blew a couple of eggs thinking I might do some kind of decorating, and then just made some fairy cakes on a whim. It was nice to have something sweet (other than my tiny chocolate button ration of course!)
What else? Er... nothing I don't think. Popped to the supermarket yesterday but I sat in the car, Mr Cheery went in on his own for milk, fresh fruit etc, bit of a top up. Just had a video chat with some friends tonight which was nice, and I spoke to another friend on the phone earlier too. Oh! And I found some seeds lurking in a basket in the greenhouse - two years out of date, and a couple of opened packets had gone mouldy (not surprising, they've been out there all winter) but I planted some curly kale and some rainbow chard and we'll see what happens. Oh and I finally finished my compost bin and started shifting stuff into it from the old one as well. Oh, and I got the scythe out for the first time this year and did a bit of the lawn!
I think that's itMost of the day I've just been rather sad about poor old Mildred, so I feel rather drained and washed out now (especially after an hour on the video chat). Just dawned on me that I've not had any tea (too full of fairy cakes, and then couldn't face it after the drains fiasco, and then just forgot til now) but it feels a bit late to bother. Don't even think we've got any bread for a quick slice of toast, but perhaps there's some lurking in the freezer...

I too planted some out of date seeds with fingers crossed to see what happens. Can I ask Cheery what is the best thing to do with curly kale. We have reinstated our veg box delivery and have a huge bag and it's not a veg i use a lot, any ideas welcome but I am not a fan of soggy greens having had too much of that at school in the seventies5

To my surprise, it was very easy!
I tend to live on veg stir-fries, as I don’t eat meat or fish, so I cut the kale up into smallish pieces, and chucked in on top of the stir-fry in its later stages, and it sort of wilts right down so that you hardly see it, given the volume it was raw.
Don’t be afraid to put a large amount in the pan....it will all wilt down beautifully!
It was a very easy way to eat a lot of green, leafy veg!
On that basis, you could also put it into stews and casseroles, pies, or anything, really, (although maybe not in a trifle!).

I had a look at that kale crisps recipe, and it does seem very easy!
I had to google ras el hanout though, as I’d never heard of it!
A substitute is apparently a mixture of equal parts paprika, coriander, ginger and a pinch of saffron OR just ground coriander.(I just lurve spiders!)

Nothing useful to add, just wanted to say how much I love kale 😍! You can put it in smoothies too, to give you some "hidden" greens xMortgage start: £65,495 (March 2016)
