In order to lay a bet, you need there to be enough money in the pot from other people as 'back' bets for you to lay. So as you're effectively pretending to be the bookie when you lay, think about it as the bookie does: he needs a punter to place the bet with him in the first place, otherwise the bet doesn't exist.
In the picture above (ignore the blue boxes - they're irrelevant), the top pink 'lay' box has the numbers 1.1 and £1558 in it.
The 1.1 is the odds - that's a seperate issue, but assuming you've already got as far as looking at the odds you need, then this is the figure you're laying at.
The £1558 is the amount that is effectively in the pot, i.e. the amount that punters all over the country have collectively bet between them on those particular odds.
SO, you've put your figures in the spreadsheet, and it has told you the amount you need to lay on Betfair. As long as that amount is less than £1558 (it will be!) then click on that pink box and you've got youself a matched bet!
BUT If you look a bit further down the table to the bet for '5 goals or more' (I don't know what that means BTW, probably not a bet you'd make for the purposes of MB, but just an example of figures!), you'll see that it says beside it: 9.38 and £15.
If that's the bet you need and your spreadsheet has told you that you need to place a bet of £15 or less, then you're sorted because there's £15 available at 9.38 - go ahead and it'll be matched (it gives you further confirmation just before you submit the bet, so no need to worry about someone else getting there first).
But if you needed to place a bet of, say, £20 then there isn't enough money there from the punters for you to lay - you've got a shortfall of a fiver.
BUT...(have I lost you yet?!) to the right of that box is another which says 9.39 and £16. That means that although there's only £15 available at 9.38, if you want to place a lay bet of £20, you'll get the remaining fiver at 9.39 instead. So your lay bet comprises:
£15 at 9.38
£5 at 9.39
This obviously messes up the spreadsheet figures because some of your lay is at different odds, so I only do this if the secondary part of the bet is only for a very small amount to make it up. I'm sure there'd be a way of calculating it, but as the difference is only pennies I'm not sufficiently interested to try and work it out!
But KC, to me that effectively seems to be a very long-winded way of saying exactly what you said in your first question anyway. So my concise answer is still 'Yes'!!!0 -
:T :T :T Thats brilliant! Its one thing to answer a question, its completely another to explain the principle so that I can answer that question for myself in future: you know, give a man a fish or give him a fishing rod. You just gave me both! If I could press the thanks button multiple times, I would!2023: the year I get to buy a car0

Thanks guys! Went to bed last night thinking I should possibly come back and delete as it probably didn't make any sense, hopefully you're not just humouring me!!! Just give us a shout if there's anything else, although I warn that all my responses are likely to be as long-winded, partly because I don't fully understand the answers myself!
Off to do some more housework - viewers at 6 after an apparent 'plumbing emergency' yesterday. Yeah, right.0 -
No humouring going on, Pandapaws, thats not something I do, ever. And as for "long winded" - thats exactly the level of response I needed. Don't you dare delete it, lol!
Have been seeing on your sig you've got a baby due in 10 weeks! Wow - how are you doing?2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
