House number envy

  • We've never viewed a number 13, but had we come across a particularly nice property that happened to be a 13, I don't think it would have put us off. I do know a couple of roads we've bought in previously had no number 13, including one where it was replaced by 11a ;)

Our new house (name only, no number) is one of only three properties on the rural road. None have numbers.

We only got road names about 15 years ago in our village. If you put my name, house name and postcode on a letter then it would still be delivered. In fact I suspect it would get here with just name and postcode too.
I'd agree based on my own experience. As a young person I got a letter delivered which only had [Honorific] + Surname, Village name. It helped that the village name is unique, and it could only have been delivered to my house or my gran's, and the postie knew my gran lived on her own. ;)

In theory that address should still work, but I think Surname and Postcode would now be a safer bet - if only to make sure the letter makes it's way efficiently through the automation.

As a kid, I lived in a village called Ashford. The local library sent a postcard to me (something I'd reserved was in, I think).

It went to seven other Ashfords in the country before somebody thought "Oooh, maybe since there's a Derbyshire libraries logo on it, there might be one there?"
  • My parents delighted at the fact that we all lived at "No 10" ( No shiny black door though :D )
  • We're in the process of buying a number 1
The house I grew up in was a 13 and we have nothing but happy memories there, no bad luck at all!
I've been living at a 74 for a few years and never thought of it as sounding less classy, but yeah, it actually makes a lot of sense

I've lived at 16 different numbers but never a single number (not counting a flat) and never a name. No class at all! We did nearly have a name once but the previous owners took it with them. (They also took the stair carpet although they moved to a bungalow.)

When I worked on the Christmas post in a rather drab area I delivered to a small squashed-in semi called "The Tropics".

The first road I lived in had no number 10, but it had a 13. There was a gap where 10 might have been.
  • We live at No 8, Chinese consider it to be very lucky, several Chinese live in our cul-de-sac, I don't think we will have a problem selling when the time comes :D
