I suspect the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue would tell you that four-digit house numbers are the way to go.
I doubt the current resident is even aware of the full postal address.

We don't have a road name, let alone a number.
Our full official Royal Mail address is housename, village, next village, county, postcode.

Our last-but-one house was similar -

    House name, village, county, postcode.

New house - hoping to exchange on purchase any minute! - will be -

House name, road, village, county, postcode.

Previously our addresses have been -

    1) 8
    2) 7
    3) 53
    4) 8 (this one had a name as well as a number)
    5) 8
6)120 (another with a name as well)
    7) Name only
    8) 1

Until fairly recently, I thought we had some strange attraction to number 8s/numbers adding up to 8 (5+3), lol!

Only other address I've had - apart from student digs - was 216 (family home from age 0-18).........

Really? as official royal mail address's never include the county. and next village would only be used if it was in fact bigger and more a town.

What about 4 digits......1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, for example!

Actually, thinking about the current residents, you're spot on. More digits must come with less class!!

I used to live at No 1. But there were only a total of 6 in the street.
When I was at no 3, there were only 4 in the street :D Anyone beat that?

My apologies. It's actually city rather than (similarly named) county. The population of this village is about twice that of the other one in the address (less than 500 between the two), but they're on the main road.

I'm a number 1. Moving to a house with a name soon though, does anyone want to buy my No 1 house then?

There is an address that was always historically just: Number 1, London.

    Apsley House.
