However, i personally have left it alone and have not complained to VODA. i prefer them marking me with green ticks every month. I for one do not understand why people on this thread think that having an open account with green ticks for a long period of time is going to cause harm on your credit file, it will do the exact opposite. Eventually i will get it closed down, but as for now - happy to let it remain.
Aren't too many open credit accounts seen as a bad thing if you're applying for a mortgage?
I don't think so, as long as the balance is zero and there is no available credit involved it won't make an impact. What will make an impact, and in a positive way, is the impact on the average length of your open accounts. If you have an average of a minimum of six years it has a positive impact on your credit. I got that from the notes and tips from MSE's credit club.
I still have Vodafone showing on my report under Multiple Communications Accounts (probably due to having both mobile and broadband with them) and I left them in October last year. I thought since they didn't auto cancel my direct debit with them that's why I still have an active account with them that they report on. And that come 13 months later when my bank auto cancels it due to inactivity, they would then fully close said inactive account and stop reporting it. But having read @block10 's post above maybe that won't be the case after all.
It's not due to having an active DD.  I cancelled my DD when he last payment was taken (actually it was a refund of a credit balance) and they still continued to report it.  Eventually raised a dispute with two of the CRAs (Experian seem to not want to send me a PIN to access theirs) and after a month or so the account was removed completely from all 3.  Although I have heard they also seem to start reporting it again with some people so...
Given there's been reports of mobile companies continuing to take payment by direct debit after contracts have been cancelled, surely the sensible thing to do is to login to your online bank account after the last payment has been taken and to cancel the direct debit, meaning that they can't then take a further payment in error.  I don't know why anyone would want to keep an active direct debit for a service they no longer use, unless maybe you have an account which requires 2 active direct debits to pay interest and you haven't yet got a new direct debit setup with your replacement provider.
    Okay?

I never said that cancelling a DD after the last payment was made was a bad thing so I'm not sure you replied with all that.

Of course, this forum is littered with cases of people ending up with defaults from contracts that have been ended, they thought they had paid the final bill but there was a small additional amount outstanding. Since it's a hell of a lot easier to reclaim incorrectly claimed DD amounts back from your bank than it is to get these companies to remove these defaults I wouldn't be too hasty cancelling a DD.
I was agreeing with you (and disagreeing with the person who earlier said that they keep the direct debit active so it looks like they've have done a good job on their credit report.)  I'll make a note in future to not post when I agree with you because you obviously don't like it.
You should probably do it in a way that looks like you're agreeing with me then, instead of quoting me and then discussing something completely irrelevant..  Then I'll be fine with it.

Actually I'd say the worst thing you can do is cancel a DD too early with any company. Certainly leave it open for six months or so after what you think is the final payment. They have a way of paying you back any overpayments and it's simple to recover incorrectly taken DD's with an indemnity claim. This also makes you aware they think you owe them money so can argue your case.
The Vodafone forum is littered with people complaining, who now have defaults for minimal sums because they stopped the DD and had no idea they owed anything. Unlike financial institutions, mobile networks don't even have to notify you they are placing a default before they do it.

It really depends on how the company behaves.  I had an energy company that was clearly just on autopilot and taking the standard payment each month after I moved, so I had no choice but to cancel it as it was obvious they weren't going to stop and I've had to take the thing to the ombudsman. I don't think companies like Vodafone, EE, O2 etc are this bad though so leaving the DD open shouldn't be a problem.
  • Hello all,
I've got a question and dilemma.
My credit score shows a default from 2018 from Vodafone.
Last time I had a contract with Vodafone was 2006 when I was 18.
I never paid off the debt, ignored it yes was wrong.
I'm now at the age of wanting to get a mortgage, this however is holding me back and I don't know who to ask for help.
I have been given the run around by Vodafone a

What account is it relating to? The same one from 2006?

Interestly this week i received an unexpected £3 refund from voda. Wonder if this is somehow linked to voda still appearing on my credit report.
  • I had the same issue - I spoke to someone on the phone who advised me to go into store with a form of ID. They were able to access my account and give me my account number. Vodafone had listed my account as inactive rather than close it - I rang them and gave them my account number and they were able to close the account. My contract ended a few years ago and I only noticed it was still active once checking my credit file.

No, that's something to do with paying interest on old credit balances.  There have been a few threads on this.

Vodafone still appearing on your report long after you've left them is just plain old incompetence.

On my credit report it states the contract was opened 13th October 2015, that never happened. My Phone contract was with 3 Mobile at that time. I understand i would have to write to them, I don't have an address to get the ball rolling. Any help would be appreciated.
