However, i personally have left it alone and have not complained to VODA. i prefer them marking me with green ticks every month. I for one do not understand why people on this thread think that having an open account with green ticks for a long period of time is going to cause harm on your credit file, it will do the exact opposite. Eventually i will get it closed down, but as for now - happy to let it remain.
Aren't too many open credit accounts seen as a bad thing if you're applying for a mortgage?
I don't think so, as long as the balance is zero and there is no available credit involved it won't make an impact. What will make an impact, and in a positive way, is the impact on the average length of your open accounts. If you have an average of a minimum of six years it has a positive impact on your credit. I got that from the notes and tips from MSE's credit club.
I still have Vodafone showing on my report under Multiple Communications Accounts (probably due to having both mobile and broadband with them) and I left them in October last year. I thought since they didn't auto cancel my direct debit with them that's why I still have an active account with them that they report on. And that come 13 months later when my bank auto cancels it due to inactivity, they would then fully close said inactive account and stop reporting it. But having read @block10 's post above maybe that won't be the case after all.
It's not due to having an active DD.  I cancelled my DD when he last payment was taken (actually it was a refund of a credit balance) and they still continued to report it.  Eventually raised a dispute with two of the CRAs (Experian seem to not want to send me a PIN to access theirs) and after a month or so the account was removed completely from all 3.  Although I have heard they also seem to start reporting it again with some people so...

Because im still having the same issue on an account that was closed in 2017. I thought better to revive the existing thread rather then to open another.

Given there's been reports of mobile companies continuing to take payment by direct debit after contracts have been cancelled, surely the sensible thing to do is to login to your online bank account after the last payment has been taken and to cancel the direct debit, meaning that they can't then take a further payment in error.  I don't know why anyone would want to keep an active direct debit for a service they no longer use, unless maybe you have an account which requires 2 active direct debits to pay interest and you haven't yet got a new direct debit setup with your replacement provider.

well it's interesting to know i'm not the only one, i haven't been with vodafone since feb 2019 but like many others they are still appearing on my credit file with £0 each month. I have spoken to a few people on the chat and it's proving difficult to get this removed. how can they get away with this ? who should I report them to ? Equifax? FSA?

    Okay?

I never said that cancelling a DD after the last payment was made was a bad thing so I'm not sure you replied with all that.

Of course, this forum is littered with cases of people ending up with defaults from contracts that have been ended, they thought they had paid the final bill but there was a small additional amount outstanding. Since it's a hell of a lot easier to reclaim incorrectly claimed DD amounts back from your bank than it is to get these companies to remove these defaults I wouldn't be too hasty cancelling a DD.

I can't help with who you should report this to, but my Vodafone account was still showing on my credit file 4 years after leaving them, and I had the same experience as you with numerous chats not leading anywhere. In the end it was the Vodafone Facebook Messenger team that managed to resolve it for me, doing so immediately and with no hassle (not taking into account the 2 days it took to respond to the initial query) which I was pleasantly surprised about. Might be worth giving that a try.

I was agreeing with you (and disagreeing with the person who earlier said that they keep the direct debit active so it looks like they've have done a good job on their credit report.)  I'll make a note in future to not post when I agree with you because you obviously don't like it.
