  • Whoops (auto corrected) that one slipped through.
  • 8217 is Unicode Character 'RIGHT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK'.
It's represented by two bytes, X'2019', which is decimal 8217.
Single byte character sets do not include this character.

Its got worse and more inexplicable.

Just made a post from an iPad, all OK.

Made few edits from the same iPad, all the exclamation marks came back with a vengeance. had to re-edit on computer.

Did this start happening when they got rid of the spam button to stop threads being deleted?

I suspect that Unicode characters have been turned off in a bid to prevent non-English character-based Spam.

It seems to be a known bug if you have Apple Smart Punctuation enabled, however I'm not sure why it's suddenly become a problem on MSE

but it could be as Cornucopia has posted above?

I've turned smart punctuation off on my iPad, not happened again.

    Let!!!8217;s try that.
The apostrophe above inserted by IOS

    Now let!!!8217;s try it again.
    apostrophe inserted by me

    Now with SP turned off
    Let's try that.

Very weird. So even if you insert the punctuation yourself, if SP is on that causes the problem.
  • I am getting it too. Using iPad and guess it may be from the suggestive text bar.
All that clutter used to be money
